The roles Angie and I currently fill at FamilyLife have us on what I like to see as multiple short-term mission trips every year. We fly into a city, where work has already been happening to fill the ballroom. We arrive onsite and ‘set the table’ for what God will do through the Gospel-centered messages the speakers will give. We get to have conversations, hear guest feedback, and read the top ten comments about what took place. Then we fly home, and rarely do we get to know what happens next.  

In San Antonio, our last fall event, we had something unusual happen. We got a peek at some of the generational impact from previous events. We learned of this both from stories told to other team members and through first-hand testimony. Here are two of the most notable stories.

First, three of the four couples you see in the picture above came together as a family to serve in the Shop with Angie and the Shop team. This family was there that weekend because of the change God made in the parents’ lives at a previous Weekend to Remember. The mom and dad had come during a difficult time in their marriage and now they came back, bringing their daughters and son-in-laws with them so they can hear the truth of God’s Word in the context of marriage. They were such a joy to serve with, and they were a light to all that attended. 

Second, a newly married lady shared with a team member how she heard about the Weekend to Remember. She said, "I will never forget when I was 7 years old at our lake house and my mom and dad came home from the Weekend to Remember, because my dad sat us all down in the living room, began weeping and asking us for forgiveness for not being the father and husband he should be.  So when I got married, I wanted to get whatever they got from the Weekend to Remember because my Dad was forever changed by his experience.”

What a blessing and honor it is to serve at these many different short-term mission trips all over the country and what an extra blessing it is when we get to hear some of the “what happened next” stories of those seeds previously planted.
