Cincinnati Public Schools Open Enrollment - Frequently Asked Questions
Walnut Hills Entrance Exam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Exam Time? The entire exam takes approximately 3 hours. We start with reading/vocabulary sections, have a short break, and then go to the math/computation sections. Students who have completed the computation section are free to exit the examination, though we encourage students to use all available time to review answers, make sure nothing is blank, etc.
Exam Preparation? CPS Testing does not offer any Study Materials or Recommendations. The examination covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, and computation. Parents may want to encourge their children to review grade level content for Reading and Math. There may be third-party materials out there – the Testing & Assessment Department has not vetted those products. Parents & guardians should proceed with caution. The Scantron bubble answer sheet is multiple-choice. Children should be aware how to complete a bubble answer sheet for standardized paper tests. Example: How to Fill the Exam Bubble Sheet
Grade Level Tested?: The examination is grade-level appropriate (i.e., a 7th grader takes a 7th grade test).
What are the Iowa Assessments? The Iowa Assessments are nationally-normed and reliable assessments and are used to identify giftedness in specific academic abilities.
What materials do I need to bring? All materials for the exam (pencils, scratch paper, etc.) are provided that morning. Students may bring water and snacks. However, snacks should be consumed during the breaks to minimize disruption.
Exam Scores? The exam is scored depending on how far along into the school year we are. There’s no advantage to testing late in the season – we do not recommend waiting.
When will we receive the Exam Scores? Exam results are emailed approximately six weeks after the scheduled exam date to the email address listed in Schoolmint. Once available, exam results can also be viewed in the Schoolmint dashboard > Messages: http://register.cps-k12.org. Exam results are not permitted to be given via telephone.
Once available, exam results can also be viewed in the http://register.cps-k12.org dashboard under Messages. Results are not able to be given via telephone.
How is the Score determined? Students who earned above the minimum score but below a 75 in a subject area (i.e. scores of 65-74) are encouraged to retest in that subject to give them the best chance of reaching a composite score of 140. The Reading and Vocabulary sections provide a Reading Total national percentile ranking. The Mathematics and Computation sections provide a Mathematics Total national percentile ranking. The sum of the Reading Total and Mathematics Total national percentile rankings on this test must equal 140 or higher, and each individual test percentile ranking must be 65 or higher.
○ For example, if a student earned a score of 67 in Reading and 60 in Math, the student should retest in both subject areas even though they met the minimum score for reading. Maximum score of each part from both attempts will be used for the composite score.
How many times can my child test? Students are permitted two test opportunities per school year. Students needing to retest must wait two months after the first attempt to take their second attempt. The highest scores from both attempts are utilized in creating the combined percentile rank.
