"We are connected with all the animals in the world and the trees and every living thing. We're not better than, we're the same as. We might look different, we might eat different things but we're all connected. "

"Food tastes better when you're the one growing and cultivating it and other folks are more willing to take a risk and try something new when they can talk to the person that's grown it… Food is just such a huge way to build community. Have a meal with anyone; and you're going to know a lot about them by the time that's over."

"We need something from the earth….We need nutrition and especially with food we grow in the garden…not cans of food."

"I think vegetables are the most incredible food that we have. I think that they are, in a short way, a simple answer to a lot of complicated problems…  we need to see more vegetables, hold more vegetables and learn to cook with [them] and that will help us become a healthier society."

"There is nothing in a community that doesn't have some attention being paid to who's hungry, who's getting what they need, who isn't. The beauty of our country towns is there is a network where people know each other and they know who’s at risk. "

"Sharing food, coming together and breaking bread, that's where we discuss the other things we're struggling with. When you have a meal and  you're exchanging food, you're kind of on an even level. You can talk about your struggles in a way with less judgment and hierarchy. I think food can alleviate hierarchy."
