Chris is a local social justice advocate and musician. She experienced homelessness during the pandemic and was then housed in a state-run motel in Holyoke where many people experienced isolation and trauma. During this period she spent most of her time in downtown Northampton taking action in the ways that she could. She makes a point of sharing food wherever she goes and letting people know that food, water, and the right to vote are all human rights. She sees food as a unifying force that brings people together.
“For me, sharing food, sharing water is a way of saying we're the same. If I can help you in your journey, even if it's just like - what's a pear really going to do for sustenance? Not much…but it increases hope.”
“Sharing food and coming together and breaking bread - because that's where we discuss the other things we're struggling with - when you have a meal. And when you're exchanging food, you're kind of on an even level and you could talk about your struggles in a way with less judgment and hierarchy. I think food can alleviate hierarchy and if we could have more food grown on an individual level, then we have a fighting chance, as the world is on fire.”
