Kirby lives in Florence and is a mother of two grown sons. She moved to Northampton in early 2020 and found her new neighbors welcoming and helpful as she navigated the early days of the pandemic. She is an herbalist and spent much of her time during the pandemic creating and sharing tinctures and teas.
“I think an important message is to hold on to faith that things always change, things can get better… I find having a sense of community is really helpful…I know from my experience that fear does not solve anything, and it can lead to a lot of issues, including exacerbating trauma…There are people out there who have no one and I believe that that contributes to illness."
“[At the start of the pandemic] we just moved [to Northampton]. We didn't even know our neighbors but we received a notice in our mailbox and all the neighbors were putting their names and contact information on a list and if anybody needed something... These were all strangers…it was really an overwhelming experience in the most beautiful way.”
“Every single time that I go to the Grow Food mobile market there's an abundance of food and it's good quality…My heart always overflows with gratitude to see these people working so hard to make this happen and for the people in line chatting with each other. We're getting to know each other and it's an opportunity for connection…They really help stretch the budget. I like to have good quality food, and it's expensive.”
