Climate finance refers to local, national or transnational financing—drawn from public, private and alternative sources of financing—that seeks to support mitigation and adaptation actions that will address climate change. The Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement call for financial assistance from Parties with more financial resources to those that are less endowed and more vulnerable. This recognizes that the contribution of countries to climate change and their capacity to prevent it and cope with its consequences vary enormously. Climate finance is needed for mitigation, because large-scale investments are required to significantly reduce emissions. Climate finance is equally important for adaptation, as significant financial resources are needed to adapt to the adverse effects and reduce the impacts of a changing climate.

Reflection and Discussion Questions + Summary
How are we doing toward the project goal?
Good progress but off track (focusing on aesthetics instead of the climate)
Pretty well as a group but individually have some room for improvement
Very well but stuck on one idea without progress
What new skill(s) have you learned?
Creativity skills and working with what we have available; Design skills
Teamwork
Understanding the impacts of climate change today and here
Planning skills (instead of jumping right in)
What skills or knowledge do we need to advance the project?
Time management (logistics)
Long-term care for our project, research the needs of the plants we will install
Research how other people across the world are doing similar projects
Communication of what we are doing AND of what the expectations are
Starting the action
Divide into small teams. Teams 1 and 2 remain in the classroom to complete their tasks with one teacher present. Team 3 leaves with the other teacher to the purchasing department to search for a more affordable outdoor furniture provider and/or identify existing furniture around campus that can be moved. Team 3 will also attempt to establish contact with the school gardener.
Team 1. A few people to research about how other schools or businesses are designing green roofs for mitigating or adapting to climate change. What can we do to increase the focus of our impact on the environment AND what are other schools doing?
Team 2. A couple of people to draft and send an email to the school director for authorization to use and change the patio space. Utilize the proposal for specifics of impact outcomes and summarizing the final vision. These people will also transcribe the handwritten lists into the the digital table for final submission for purchase of plants & planters.
Team 3. A couple of people to draft and send an email to the head groundskeeper in search of affordable plants, seating, construction, etc. Also will visit the the purchasing department to learn of more affordable vendors.
We have a location approved for our rooftop climate garden… near the English/Spanish classrooms and above the library. The rocky surface will be covered with a composite-wood deck and be accessible by stairs, which is the same material or surface as where primary students eat lunch next to the school garden (photo, upper left).
Dr. H shared that CNG has an outdoor furniture vendor (Tropical) and that we may be able to get a discount from ordering through them :) A couple of tables and benches, umbrellas…
Mrs. H shared that we can have a fiberglass plaque engraved with a photo and inscription of/from our impact group to memorize our dedication and hard-work
The gardener will help us with ordering the pots and plants, which may have to be installed as a summer work order.
Email him a list of the types and amounts of plants and pots we need
He will draw up an order and send it to admin to be approved, acquire the materials
There is greater consensus around having one continuous bench around the perimeter and plants in their own individual pots. The main plants we are going to request include dahlias, bougainvillea, fuschia, rosemary, and trompetos. These plants will help introduce more color in the space as well as habitat for organisms. The shade provided will regulate surface temperatures and the soil in pots will help regulate flooding on the patio during rainstorms.
Date and time: Monday, May 16, from 12:10pm to 1:30pm.
Location: HS Gym.
Each IMPACT group will have a table to showcase its project. Please refer to the guidelines to prepare.
IMPACT groups will be divided evenly into two subgroups (A and B) before the showcase.
This is the summer work progress on the green patio, before the start of the school year.
Four tables with umbrellas and solar panels were added to the space, and it is bordered by a transparent glass wall.
It gets lots of use. We hope to add our plants soon.
This year, more patio spaces sprouted the solar-powered picnic tables
