Explaining resource Depletion
The Salto del Tequendama has a lot of current and past historical significance in Colombia. It marks the point between the upper and lower Bogotá River Watersheds. When the Spaniard conquistadores arrived to what is now referred as the Sabana de Bogotá, many Muisca people leapt to their death from this waterfall to avoid being subjugated to the invaders. In more contemporary times, it served as a popular tourist destination and had a bustling hotel-restaurant to enjoy the landscape. Today, it flows with water but the river is dead. Land and water pollution from upstream has caused a total loss of life in the river except for methanogenic bacteria. Human activity has totally depleted access to safe and clean water resources, including fish, and destroyed the local economy from the offensive odors.
