The first real solo trip I took after moving to Ecuador was to the coast for nine days. It was a very empowering trip because I went by myself, survived and struggled and learned with my level of Spanish, tried a lot of foods that I never thought I would eat... and did this without a working cell phone.

On an unassuming Saturday night, I experienced the most violent earthquake in my life. The epicenter was located in Pedernales, Manabi, Ecuador and registered as a 7.8 on the Richter scale (followed by 1030+ aftershocks). Although I was over 250 km or 150 miles away, the movement caused by the release of so much energy caused buildings and vertical signs to sway back and forth for minutes afterward.
