Using Aquariums to learn the N-Cycle

Application: Waterlogged soils lead to nitrogen deficiencies in soil.

Water-logging saturates the soil with water. This reduces the amount of nitrogen in soils due to —

- A decrease in denitrification (O2 poor conditions, Pseudomonas create N2)
- An increase in leeching (water draining carries soluble minerals toward groundwater)

Insectivorous plants...

... are adapted to live in waterlogged soil. They are most commonly found in wetland biomes and other areas with poor soil drainage. Their insect and animal eating strategy helps to makeup for the insufficient availability of nitrogen in the environment. Trap, digest and absorb nutrients from insects for their nitrogen nutrition.
