Trip to Zingela: 6 - 8 May

On Wednesday, 6 May, the Grade 3s left for an adventurous school trip to Zingela. After arriving at our drop-off point, we set off on a 9 km hike down into the Zingela Valley and towards the Tugela River. Some children had to dig deep and keep walking despite muddy shoes, hungry tummies, and tired legs. Three hours later, we arrived at James Camp and enjoyed a delicious burger for lunch. Making the fire and potjie was the group task for the evening, and the meal was scrumptious.

Day 2 was filled with amazing activities and challenges. River rafting on the Zingela River was thrilling. Abseiling was challenging for some, as it is not easy to trust the rope and harness, but for those who took part, the smiles of bravery and achievement were wonderful to see. Rock climbing was also a great experience, and many children eagerly joined in.

Around camp, there was time for fun on the riverbanks, relaxing on the swing beds, and playing hide-and-seek around the tents.

Day 3 dawned, and we set off on a sunrise walk to the top of a steep mountain overlooking Zingela and the Tugela River. We spotted giraffe in the valley below and sat quietly, listening to the sounds of the morning and watching the mist hanging low above the Tugela River.

This trip was a truly wonderful experience: being out in nature, enjoying one another’s company, and finding joy in the simple things in life.
