Gender Equality

Introduction

We are the gender equality team. Our names are Jhanvi, Riya, Charlie, Sofiah and Pragun, and our mentor is Mr. Mark. This year for the exhibition we decided to work on gender equality and we are very excited to share our learning with you and hope you enjoy.

Before choosing our topic each one of us had to individually write a letter to our class teacher explaining the reasons for our choice and what makes us have interest in the topic. And we all choose the topic gender equality! After writing the letter we were placed in teams.

Now lets breifly discuss what gender equality is. Gender equality is when everyone is treated equally and are given the same opportunities irrespective of their gender.

We chose this issue as it is becoming a huge problem now days and we wanted to spread awareness. We are all humans and need to be treated same way. Whether we have different genders we are still humans with FEELINGS. And we want to change the inequality....

We learned a lot during this exhibition and had lots of fun.

We are very excited to show you our inquiry and hope you can learn some new information.

Mentor's Note

Group 6 Gender Equality

Mentoring Group 6 was made easy by their enthusiasm and desire to exhibit all the traits of the Learner Profile in their research and planning. With some basic guidance and collaborative discussion, the group quickly saw how a clear Central Idea allows for the identification of key concepts and in turn, the establishment of three clear lines of inquiry. From this point on Group 6 were able to see the roadmap for completion of the exhibition and were able to work semi-autonomously, with only minor support. The journey of the exhibition, alongside the final product will serve the members of the group well, as they transition to secondary school and the MYP.

Interview

Dr. Yannick Bosquet is Head of French Studies at the University of Mauritius

Firstly we all got to know each other and she was friendly and a person very easy to talk to and we all enjoyed the interview!

She told us about how she works at a university in Mauritius and is the head of French which left us all amazed.

After talking with her about what she does and al we asked her the questions we prepared

The first question was : What does gender equality mean to you as a University lecturer?

She replied by saying : How unfair she finds it and how it is very wrong to treat others unequally. She said that it is very sad how some people don't get the same life that they deserve as others and it hurts her very much. She also gave us some examples of unfair treatment.

One of the examples she gave us was..

For example when you talk to a man you call them MR but for women there is miss,mrs and many more which defines if you're married or not and all that which is just so annoying and how unfair it is.

Then after a while of talking we asked her our second question which is : Dr.Yannic as head of french can you tell us what responsibilities for gender equality?

She replied by saying she takes all her students to respect others so they grow well and learn to respect no matter what their gender is.

My team and I were very glad to hear that and appreciated it a lot.

Then we asked her of the most important questions we had which was : Do you have a gender equality policy at where you work?

First of all she said “That is an amazing question to ask” and we were delighted. Dr.Yannick said that they don't have a policy but are currently working on one. She said that all students at the university like to help in small things like these and are very kind. We were overjoyed hearing that they are trying to make one at least!

Finally the last question we asked her was “Do you believe gender equality has changed over the years”

And as expected she said “yes”

We talked a bit more about how unfair it is and how we are trying to spread awareness. Eventually the interview ended and she had to go.

We had a wonderful time interviewing and learned some new facts and things we didn’t know. We even saw a different perspective on what other people think. It was a pleasure and we would like to thank her for letting us interview her!

Interview

About the interview with Mr.Jeff

Mr. Jeff Hart is Head of Clavis International School.

( We had the same questions as the other interview so we could see two points of view on gender equality )

We started by talking to each other and talking about ourselves. Then we thanked him for taking his time to let us interview him as Mr.Jeff is the headmaster of school and is very busy most of the time.

Then we asked him our first question which was : What does gender equality mean to you as a headmaster?

He replied by saying that as he is head of school he needs to make sure it doesn't happen and needs to keep everyone protected. He always said it is a wrong thing to do and he tries his best to stop it wherever he can.

After a bit of talking, he told us one of his experiences and then we asked him our second question which was : : Mr.Jeff as head of school can you tell us what responsibilities you have for gender equality?

His reply was he needs to make sure it doesn't happen at school and if it does he takes action to make sure it doesn't happen again. He also said that this behaviour is not tolerated at school and could lead to serious consequences if it does. He said it is very important to respect each other no matter how you look or what gender you are or JUST ANYTHING AT ALL.

Right after we asked him our best question which is : Do you have a gender equality policy at where you work?

He replied by saying that in fact they don’t but they have a discrimination POLICY! He even showed us the small discrimination part and we asked him if WE could make a policy specifkly on gender equality and that was our action plan!

Then we asked him a nice simple question : “Do you believe gender equality has changed over the years” And we guessed it the answer was..”yes”

And quickly we moved on with the previous question which is : Have you seen a difference in gender equality in different schools?

Next, we asked him if he saw a difference in gender equality in the different schools he went to. He said that yes, he did indeed see a difference in gender equality.

Finally, we asked him what was his perspective on gender equality. He said that everyone should work hard to achieve their position and it shouldn’t be determined on whether they are a man, a woman or anything else.

We thanked him for his time and then it was the end of the interview. We learned lots of new things!

Survey

We did a survey around school and in all we interviewed 50 people. We asked them these questions :

-Do you know what is gender equality?

-Did you ever discriminate someone because of their gender unknowingly?

-Have you seen a change of gender equality in your lifetime?

- Were the changes positive or negative

-Would you like to end gender equality

-Would you like to know more about gender equality?

Dear Mr Jeff Hart,

We are group 6 for exhibition 2021 “Gender equality” . We would like to thank you for your time for the interview last time.We got loads of information from the interview and learned some new things.

As our action plan we are writing a letter to you to suggest having a specific gender equality policy at school.

We did a little survey and saw that there were some issues that happened around school.There is more information below.

During breaks the boys take most of the space on the pitch,even though there are two sides,but boys take both sides since they play football and girls can’t go on the other side because boys hit us with the ball.In other words they take both sides because they hit their balls everywhere.

To consider we are voting that girls should have a part of the pitch for them and not only the BOYS or maybe have a pitch only for girls this would be perfect.We would like to add up on the booklet you shared with us.

There are things that boys have but girls doesn’t have.We would like to change that and make us equal because, we are born equal.Boys think they are cooler than girls, so they take all the action books during library and we are left with normal books.This doesn’t only happen in year 6 we would say mostly in younger classes. Not only because we are a group of girls that we can’t voice out our opinions.Girls are strong enough.

We will take another example in some other schools around the world where girls and boys can wear whatever they want, But they have dress codes for girls and not for boys which is clearly discriminating against girls .For example this video, you can clearly understand what we are trying to say :

Our final suggestion is let’s add up the booklet and the gender equality policy we think it would be great,and make all of us equal.I hope that you can think about it and we were able to convince you of having a gender equality policy that will be for everyone at school staff,students,teachers.

Final Reflection

These past weeks were tough. But thanks to our mentor Mr.Mark able to complete all our work. Modeling of the whole process really helped us to understand what to do.

During five weeks we worked really hard to complete our exhibition and we did many things that lead up to us completing our exhibition.

During the process we were into some problems. One was the wind. During our interview the wind knocked out our sound and Jhanvi then had to write the interview down.

So in the end we completed our year 6 exhibition and we are now confidently moving on format.

Overall it has been a difficult but successful journey and we are proud of ourselves.
