Introduction:
Hello everyone!
Welcome to our PYP exhibition. We are Shailee, Ackbarr Ali, Melina, Neel and Caitleen and our mentor is Miss Ashna Perrine.
Our transdisciplinary theme is ‘Sharing the Planet’ and we decided to focus on the concept of access to equal opportunities because discrimination can sometimes deny you from living your life fully. Our topic for the exhibition is discrimination.
At first, we all wanted to work on racism except from Melina who wanted to work on religion and we were able to incorporate religion in racism but after a discussion with Mr Armand, we found that working on only racism would in some ways limit our inquiry which is why we decided to work on discrimination
It was a pleasure working with the Yr 6 students. They were very involved with their work. They already knew what their work would look like. They have a lot of ideas that needs to be put together and they were very responsible about the work that needs to be done. They were good communicators and open-minded about the world they are living in and good inquirers.
Disability discrimination in our society is very common. We had the pleasure to meet Mr. Balveer Beehari and Mr. Jean Michel Perrine, who are nurses at the Brown Sequard Hospital in Beau Bassin. My group, consisting of Melina, Ackbarr-Ali, Shailee, Neel and I, interviewed them to learn more about disability. We prepared a list of questions for them to present at our exhibition. The interview was very helpful. We learned about disability and what measures are taken to fight discrimination against disabled people, if every disabled person face discrimination or can financial stability help improve their living conditions.
We learned that many disabled people face discrimination especially poor people suffer the most and yes financial stability can definitely help. For all the questions we asked, we got the answer from both Mr. Balveer Beehari and Mr. Jean Michel Perrine.
How to reduce discrimination ?
Respect cultural and racial differences in the workplace.
Be professional in conduct and speech.
Refuse to initiate, participate, or condone discrimination and harassment.
Avoid race-based or culturally offensive humor or pranks. When in doubt, leave it outside the workplace.
Familiarize yourself with the company's workplace policies and act responsibly.
Attend training on EEO principles and learn about your legal rights and responsibilities under the anti-discrimination laws. Also visit www.eeoc.gov for information on discrimination and harassment.
Be proactive. Report incidents of inappropriate, discriminatory, harassing or abusive behavior to your supervisor, Human Resources department, union, or management.
If you experience or witness discrimination or harassment contact EEOC or your local
human rights commission.
Nelson Mandela is one of the largest figures in the world when it comes to eliminating discrimination. He also played a substantial role in bringing down apartheid.
We can observe that 4 out of 19 people we interviewed do not known the exact meaning of discrimination and think that discrimnation is what you identify as when you commit a crime but as shown on the pie charts the majority of people know what discrimination means.
Everyone we interviewed answered “no” to the question ‘Do you think discrimination is right and should continue’ But one person interviewed was hesitant because she said that there is a positive side to discrimiantion but still she answered no” to the question.
1 out of 19 people answered yes to the question “Does discrimination only happen to adults?” and the rest of the people answered “no ''. It is clear that the majority of people think that discrimnation does not only happen to adults and they are right.
5 out of 19 peple said that the sitution of discrimination is pretty severe and 31.6% meaning 5 poeple think that it can happen to anyone, this means it is really severe and and 9 people said its out of control and 6 people said that it can happen to anyone.
This is our French component. We decided to do a slogan to keep things simple as well as having something power full to say.
As our action component, we chose to spread awareness among the school community about discrimination, which is a worldwide issue, which unfortunately not everyone is aware of or show concern. We decided to create and print flyers to share among teachers and students of year 4 and 5. We created it to encourage people to realise their responsibility in reducing discrimination. It would help us make a better world and a better society/community. We hope people would take that time to support any NGO that help combat discrimination. It would be a big step if people would take action to reduce discrimination.
For our art element we got inspired by some images online showcasing different races of hands all in a circle with a set of motivating words to end discrimination. Using this inspiration we made a poster where we traced out our hands on colored paper and we cut it out then stuck it on a poster. We stuck different pictures with little messages on it to inform people about discrimination and the rights that we all have. We stuck all our information on a blank white sheet of paper.
