Class periods are shortened by 15 minutes to allow for Self Directed Learning (SDL) at the end of the day. During this time students check in with their mentor, take content assessments, work on Power/Additional/Challenge Focus Areas and finish classwork. This is an essential component of our programming and required for all students taking any Summit course.
Summit Learning Newsletter: Click here to view our third Summit Parent Newsletter.
Check Schoology Daily: Please remind your student they should be checking Schoology daily for messages, course updates and announcements.
Dress Code: Last week there were many students in violation of our CAH Dress Code. Please take time to review our dress code with your student. Review the dress code by clicking here.
Attendance Email Address: If you wish to report an excused absence or tardy or you plan on picking up your student early please email cahattendance@classicalacademy.com. This will ensure your note gets delivered to the appropriate CAH Team Member.
Closed Campus: Coastal Academy High School is a closed campus. Once on campus students are required to remain on site until the conclusion of their school day.
Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures: As you arrive to school in the morning, please follow the signs and directions by driving all the way down the drop off lane. This prevents us backing up Avenida del Oro. Please do NOT make a left out of our parking under any circumstances. In the afternoon, please do not arrive more than 10 minutes prior to your designated pick up time. This will help prevent the parking lot from becoming overly congested. Alternatively, you can pick your student up in the Albertsons/Planet Fitness/KFC parking lot. It's a very short walk from our school and if time is of the essence, it may result in a quicker pickup time.

Happy Monday Coastal Academy High School Community,
Last week was so exciting in Stingrayland! Being our Cornerstone year for Athletics, Homecoming had a very special significance to us. Between Pajama, Sports & Disney Day, combined with Hot Lunch and Friday's Homecoming Game, our school was filled with Stingray spirit! I also very much enjoyed chaperoning our Homecoming Dance on Saturday. Our ASB student leaders & Mrs. Mitchell did a fantastic job organizing such a fun, memorable event. Thank you! I also want to let you know we had our first campus safety dog visit on Wednesday, October 3rd. This visit was purely preventative and a great reminder to students to continue making safe, healthy, responsible decisions. I'm thrilled to share "Astro," our campus safety dog, friend found zero substances of concern while visiting CAH!
Next, I'd like to provide an important update regarding Honors classes at Coastal Academy High School. Initially, we understood all Summit courses had Challenge Focus Areas and so we would be able to issue Honors credit for Summit courses where students complete all Power, Additional & Challenge Focus Areas. However, upon digging deeper into each course, we have learned only select courses have Challenge Focus Areas pre-built in. For the other courses, teachers can choose to individually build the Challenge Focus Areas. This said, we aren't quite ready to administer Honors credit and will wait until next school year. It is important all students have equitable access to earn Honors credit. It wouldn't be fair for one student to have the opportunity simply because their Summit course happened to have the Challenge Focus Areas already built in. To review, Power Focus Areas are mandatory. Additional Focus Areas are also mandatory as they make up 9% of your students grade. Challenge Focus Areas are optional.
This said, I know many CAH students are college bound and considering applying to competitive universities. I want to assure you not having Honors credit this year will NOT negatively impact your student's ability to get into the university of his or her choice. Colleges evaluate applicants within the context of their high school. If there are not AP or Honors classes offered at a given school, they are aware of that and it is not held against the applicant. Additionally, each high school submits a "School Profile" to universities along with official final transcripts. This profile includes school information, data on courses offered, average student test scores, curriculum and other important information. The school profile is submitted with a student's university application. From the school profile, the university is provided additional context and once again, a school not offering AP or Honors credit is not held against your student in any way. We look forward to launching Honors credit for the 2019-2020 school year.
Have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing many of you at Pastries With the Principal on Thursday, 10/11 at 8:30 (at 4183 Avenida de la Plata). If you'd prefer to join us electronically, this principal chat can be viewed electronically by following this link: meet.google.com/ydc-tjrq-rzp .
Sincerely,
Samantha Bartrom
Principal
