November 5th, 2018
Last week was a busy week of learning & optional Halloween festivities. I began my week in Phoenix with a small team of CAH teachers. While in Phoenix we attended the Summit Learning Fall Convening. While at the convening, we learned some new, innovative teaching practices that will help us better personalize the learning experience for CAH students. We also learned of some exciting updates which will make the platform easier to navigate from a parent perspective. I continue to be impressed by how quickly Summit Learning receives and responds to our feedback.
In last Monday's update, I invited you to join me in our first CAH Principal Parent Learning Institute. I am so excited by the enthusiastic response from our community! We have enough sign ups to launch two full classes, most likely a morning and afternoon option. I have just a handful of spots left. If you are interested in joining us, please fill out the Google Sign Up Sheet as soon as possible as I'll be notifying institute participants early next week. You can click here to access the Google Sign Up sheet.
Over the course of four Thursdays (11/15, 11/29, 12/6 and 12/13), participants will gain a better understanding of Summit Learning and see it in action through guided classroom visits. Specifically, our topics will include: 1) The Habits Of Success 2) Understanding Grading 3) Understanding Projects & Math Concept Units 4) How To Facilitate Crucial Conversations With Your Student At Home. Our hour long classes will include 30 minutes of education (reading/literature study) and 30 minutes of classroom visits. As a result of our time together, you will gain confidence & competence in the Summit Learning Platform.
I am so inspired by the level of eagerness to learn best ways to support students with Summit Learning. I have another informative Summit Learning newsletter I'd like to share with you. This newsletter touches on goal setting, the Habits of Success and how to navigate the platform. Click here to access the newsletter.
Thank you for your continued partnership! Have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you on campus!
Sincerely,
Samantha Bartrom
Principal
Coastal Academy High School

ASB "Food Fight Food Drive": This is your chance to gain some spirit points with your advisory. Each canned food item your students bring in will count as 1 spirit point. An ASB person will go around each day to collect the food your class has brought in and will add it to your spirit points. The food drive ends on Nov. 15, so start collecting!
Senior Sunrise: Friday, November 9th 6 am-7 am. Bring your blankets and breakfast for a memorable morning!
Friday Bell Schedule: Just a reminder, our Friday Bell Schedule is slightly different. Click here to access our bell schedule. Class periods are shortened by 15 minutes to allow for Self Directed Learning (SDL) at the end of the day. During this time students check in with their mentor, take content assessments, work on Power/Additional/Challenge Focus Areas and finish classwork. This is an essential component of our programming and required for all students taking any Summit course.
Parking Passes: There are no more student parking passes available.
