Dear Coastal High Families,
At Coastal Academy High, student safety is always our top priority. Our staff is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful environment where all students can focus on learning and feel confident that their well being matters. We take all safety and disciplinary matters seriously and work swiftly to address concerns as they arise.
Recently, our team has been engaging students in important conversations about personal boundaries, communication, and respect. A common challenge we’ve noticed among teens involves how nonverbal cues—such as body language or prolonged eye contact—can sometimes be misinterpreted. What may seem like a small gesture to one student can be perceived as a challenge or disrespect by another. These misunderstandings can escalate quickly if not addressed with calm communication and emotional awareness.
We encourage families to talk openly with their teens about healthy ways to navigate conflict and social dynamics at school. Some helpful strategies include:
Discussing emotional triggers: Help your teen identify what types of interactions make them uncomfortable and how to take a step back or seek help before reacting.
Practicing de-escalation: Encourage your teen to walk away from tense situations and find a trusted adult, such as a counselor, teacher, or administrator.
Reinforcing digital and in-person respect: Remind your teen that tone, facial expressions, and even text messages can carry unintended meaning.
Modeling communication at home: Teens learn a great deal by observing how adults handle disagreement and frustration.
Checking in regularly: A simple “How are things going with your peers?” opens the door for meaningful conversation and guidance.
Together, we can help Stingray students develop the confidence and skills to handle conflict in healthy, constructive ways. Thank you for your continued partnership in promoting safety, respect, and kindness across our campus community.
In grateful partnership,
Samantha Martinez

REMINDER: As a California independent study school, we are required to offer synchronous (live) instruction opportunities for students. This provides a chance for students to connect with a credentialed teacher in real time for academic support. In the 4-day program at Coastal Academy High School, synchronous (live) instruction opportunities are offered through Monday mentoring opportunities. Our independent study program offers separate synchronous touch points with teachers that can be scheduled directly with your I.S teacher. If you would like more information about times available to your student, please reach out to their advisory teacher directly.
We want to partner to create meaningful and fun opportunities to foster a connected Stingray community, support our dedicated staff, and enrich our children’s high school experience.
