Happy Monday CAH community,
Last week ASB launched Holiday Happenings and our campus was filled with Stingray Spirit! What a joy it was to see so many students excited to take a selfie or connect with a peer also dressed in festive attire. Last week I also had the opportunity to speak with many TCA 8th grade families interested in enrolling their student at CAH. When describing our environment, I found myself continually highlighting our thriving community and culture. CAH is a special place to be and I’m so grateful for our welcoming, accepting student body. This week we have Pajama Day (Tuesday), Winter Wear Day (Wednesday), Class Colors Day (Thursday) and Ugly Sweater Day (Friday). These spirit days are optional and students are reminded to abide by the standards set forth in our CAH Dress Code.
It’s hard to believe Fall semester finals are coming up on January 15th and 16th! In lieu of a cumulative Final exam for each course, each CAH student will be delivering ONE final Presentation of Learning that includes a reflection on their academic and social/emotional progress in all their courses. During their 6-10 minute presentation of learning, students will speak to a small panel including a teacher, student, parent and leadership team member.
Students will reflect on the below prompts:
How have you grown over this semester?
What Habit of Success have you practiced and made the most growth in this semester?
How did your selected habit assist you on a project or Final Product in one of your Summit based courses? Give examples.
Describe a struggle you overcame or something you improved at this semester.
Reflect on your goals and aspirations after high school. What are you interested and passionate about? Do you have a career goal in mind?
We are taking intentional steps to prepare students for this final culminating Semester 1 experience by:
Review each Habit of Success in Mentor Advisory. Students were provided a Habits of Success study guide to fill out. This will help them prepare for their presentation.
Before Christmas break, students will be provided with a graphic organizer that details every step of their brief presentation and the various components.
Before Christmas break, all students will be given clear expectations on the structure of the Presentation of Learning. This will be recorded, posted on Schoology and made available to parents.
We are ensuring students have ample time to prepare. Students who wish to begin thinking about their presentation over Christmas break may. Otherwise, students will prepare for the presentation as part of their Monday self-directed learning time and continue their preparations the two weeks we return from break.
Students will benefit from this Final cumulative experience by:
Reflecting on their progress by forming connections between the Habits of Success, their coursework & future goals.
Practice public speaking and receiving feedback in a safe, supportive environment. Students will be allowed to use notecards.
Having the opportunity to “dress to impress.” Whether it be at an interview or some other formal occasion, this is a valuable life skill which will serve students well!
Students will be evaluated via a clearly established rubric. This rubric will be shared with students ahead of time. Students who fulfill Presentation of Learning criteria will receive an added bonus to their final course grade.
Parents are invited and welcome to watch their students Presentation of Learning. Doing so will expand each parent’s knowledge and awareness of their student and curriculum/instruction at CAH.
More information will be coming as we inch closer to the culmination of the first semester. Below are a few immediate action steps:
Students should sign up for their Presentation of Learning slot via this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4ea4aa2ba2f85-student
2. We are in need of parent partners to volunteer on Presentation of Learning panels. All instructions will be provided the day of and no prior experience or knowledge is required. If you are interested in volunteering to serve on a panel please visit this link and select a shift that works for you: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4ea4aa2ba2f85-parent
3. Do you want to review the Habits of Success with your student? Click here to access a document which provides a concise overview of the habits with corresponding examples.
All of the above information will be clearly shared and explained to CAH students. As partners in education, I want to share this information with the CAH parent community first. I am SO thrilled to see students shine in this capacity and forego unnecessary stress that can be associated with lengthy, laborious cumulative final exams. Thank you so much for your continued partnership!
Sincerely,
Samantha Bartrom
