LPS Focus program Open House info can be found HERE along with the Fall Info Night, Tuesday, October 1, from 6:30-8 here at Irving. I visited classrooms to talk through bullying and being a positive peer model.

English 8/8D: Mr. Russel and Ms. Roberts
English 8
Students finished their Personal Narrative Essay (a true story about themselves).
Students will read, analyze, and discuss the novel The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon.
Synopsis: In 1968 Chicago, thirteen year old Sam is the son of a well-known civil rights activist. His older brother becomes secretly involved in the Black Panther movement, whose ideas Sam slowly opens his eyes to as he becomes friends with a girl from the projects.
English 8D
Students finished their Personal Narrative Essay (a true story about themselves).
Student will read, analyze, and discuss the novel Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk
A powerful and haunting novel set in rural Pennsylvania during World War II; it tells the story of a young girl named Annabelle who must confront the cruelty and injustice in her community when a new girl named Betty arrives and starts causing trouble.
PE: Haag, Beyer, Glazier and Mohlman
In PE, students are continuing to work on their softball skills. Students have been working on throwing and catching the softball with a glove. Teachers are looking for the correct throwing and catching form when we do our assessments on each student. This week, students are working on batting and being in the correct position when hitting the ball off of the batting tee.
Health: Haag, Beyer, Glazier and Mohlman
In Health, students are continuing to learn about healthy relationships, managing stress, and how getting enough sleep helps students perform better during the school day.
Students will be doing a sleep disorder research project in the coming weeks.
Publications: Mrs. Tobey
Students in Publications are currently working on the development of the theme for our 2024-2025 yearbook. Students have learned about the parts of the yearbook, have critiqued several yearbooks, and have developed a theme they will bring to life through a mock yearbook. We have finalized our 2024-2025 theme & are in the decision making process for final creative decisions, such as font styles and color scheme!
We are excited to share our theme with the Irving community soon!
Yearbooks are currently for purchase for $25 in the main office (cash/check) and on Parent Vue (card).
FCS: Mrs. Pieper
Students in FCS have started their safety and sanitation unit. They have been learning about symptoms, associated foods, and prevention strategies related to foodborne illnesses.
Next week we will be working on reading parts a recipes and working on measuring ingredients accurately. Our first food lab is just around the corner!
Orchestra: Mr. Hegert
Class Syllabus (concert dates, procedures, grading)
8th grade orchestra has learned procedures and structures for our orchestra rehearsals at Irving. Class is really starting to flow and we are getting more and more done with each full group rehearsal. The three pieces we are currently focused on are:

8th Grade Marching Band Night at LSE
If your 8th grade student is thinking about doing marching band in high school, this is a great opportunity for them to see what it’s like!
The LSE Marching Knights 8th Grade Marching Band Night will be held on Thursday, September 19th at Seacrest Field. Music for this event will be distributed to students by their middle school teacher(s). They are expected to practice their parts in preparation for this performance. Students will receive free admission to the game. Students should wear an LSE T shirt/sweatshirt or a black upper garment(shirt, sweatshirt, etc)
Itinerary
3:50 pm Arrive at Seacrest Field-Turn in Parent Permission Form
4:20 Perform at Pre Game of football game & in stands during game
4:30 Kickoff of game
7:15 Game ends(approximately)-8th grade students dismissed to their parent/guardian/ride
Students who indicated they are interested received parent permission forms this week. They will need to turn this in at the beginning of the game.
8th Grade All-State Auditions
Students auditioning for 8th grade all-state will need to bring a $10 audition fee to me by next Friday, September 20th to be able to audition. This is a fee set by the Nebraska State Band Association (NSBA) and covers the cost of judges. All students auditioning should already have the music and are able to come in before or after school for help by scheduling a time with me. We will be recording auditions the week of September 30 - more information to come.
Playing Checks:
Students should have 2 playing checks and the grade book and a third one due on Sunday 9/15 by midnight. Students may also come in after school Tuesdays or Friday to perform their playing check in person. More information is posted on Google Classroom.
Science: Mr. Smith
We continue with our unit on contact forces. Our Big Question for this unit is What happens when two objects collide? To answer this question, we are learning about motion, momentum, and force. This week we are solidifying our understanding of the relationship between force, motion, and mass. Next week we will be looking more at forces and momentum during collisions.
Students have weekly grades for spot checks of their science notebooks and a summative quiz every two weeks. The quiz for regular classes is always on Tuesdays. The quiz for differentiated classes is always on Fridays. Students are encouraged to retake quizzes when they score below a 70. As always, you can check the class website for updated information.
Algebra-Diff: Davenport and Loshbaugh
Congrats to all 8th grade students who just finished their MAP - Math and Chapter 1 tests! You are more than a test score!
We will begin Chapter 2 on Linear Relationships on Thursday, September 12th. We will begin by looking for growth in tile patterns, view slope as motion, and make connections between situations, graphs, tables, and equations for linear relationships. The test for this unit will be on Thursday, October 3 and will include Chapter 2, as well as Chapter 1 Retention.
Course 3 Math: Davenport and Loshbaugh
Congrats to all 8th grade students who just finished their MAP - Math and Chapter 1 tests! You are more than a test score!
We will begin Chapter 2 - Simplifying with Variables on Thursday, September 12. Students will begin by using a tool called algebra tiles to explore, simplify, and write variable expressions. We will then begin to compare and solve variable expressions. The test for this unit will be on Thursday, October 3.
Geometry D: Davenport
Congrats to all 8th grade students who just finished their MAP - Math and Chapter 1 tests! You are more than a test score!
We wrapped up Chapter 1 on Friday, September 13. We will begin Chapter 2 on Monday, September 16, which dives into angle relationships formed by intersecting and parallel lines, as well as triangles. We will learn how to find area of various shapes, then we will learn how to use Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between any two points on the coordinate plane.
The Chapter 2 Test with Chapter 1 Retention is scheduled for Thursday, October 3.
Social Studies: Lefler and Bayne
In 8th Grade SS we are introducing the 13 colonies and will soon transition to the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Middle Passage. This is a challenging topic for many 8th graders that could spur some good conversations at home. We are also pushing the ACE writing strategy.

Rewards Secondary: We just started our first Unit where we are continuing to work on all kinds of reading and writing skills including vocabulary, fluency, prefixes, types of sentences, sentence structure, spelling and compreshension. Students will be graded on participation, fluency, Unit tests and other miscellaneous activities.
Rewards Plus: We just started our first Unit about the East African Rift. Along with the story we will be learning vocabulary spelling, fluency, types of sentences, sentence structure, spelling and compreshension. Students will be graded on participation, fluency, Unit tests and other miscellaneous activities.
