Three sections of the gradebook: Rehearsal Technique, Assignments, Concerts
**All grades will be input on synergy, though we will often post assignments in google classroom. Check synergy for your score on an assignment :) If you see something wrong, PLEASE ask me to fix it. It wasn't done on purpose :)
Rehearsal technique is an inherent part of achieving goals in orchestra. Even if you are having a bad day, you are expected to play your instrument and give your best effort to learn the objective of the day. If you come in to class, have your materials, and put in effort every day, these are essentially free points. :)
You receive 10 points per week for participation. At the start of each week, I will give everyone a 10/10 in synergy for the week ahead. I trust each of you to do your best to keep those points.
Tardiness- Penalty- 1 points
Be in your seat, with all materials, and your instrument ready to tune, 2 minutes after the bell (10:08 or 2:13).
Behavior- Mr. Hegert will give you a redirect as a warning. Each following reminder for the same/similar action will result in loss of points. Penalty- 1 point for each additional reminder. Mr. Hegert will not make a big deal about you losing points.
An out of class movement means you have missed the lesson for a given day. Penalty- 5 points
Assignment needing to be completed outside of school is turned in late. Penalty- 2 points
Not turning in a daily assignment during class (turning in an incomplete assignment still demonstrates that you put in effort). Penalty- 3 points
Forgetting your instrument. Penalty-3 points. 2 additional points if rehearsal detective sheet is not completed.
Working on non-orchestra classwork during orchestra class time (unless you specifically get permission from Hegert). Penalty- 3 points
All absences will not count against your grade. If you are gone for an entire week, the grade for that week will be excused in the gradebook.
Assignments (summative)
For any summative assignment (except practice cards), students may retry the assignment for a better score at any point without the need to ask Mr. Hegert first. Once you have completed and turned in an assignment, it is your job to email Mr. Hegert to let him know to grade it. Here is the process:
Initial grade is posted. Use the feedback to improve.
Complete the assignment again. If you need a new copy (digitally or physically), let me know.
Turn in the assignment the same way you turned in the original.
Email Mr. Hegert to let him know you turned in a make-up assignment.
If Mr. Hegert hasn't completed re-grading in one week, remind him. He leaves your email unread in his inbox until he has completed the task.
Retries will never lower your grade. You will receive the highest score you have achieved in any attempt.
Students in orchestra are expected to practice their instrument outside of school time each week. Typically, students will practice multiple times each week in chunks of 20-40 minutes to reach the total time required to succeed each week. If students are unable to accomplish this task, you may discuss alternatives with Mr. Hegert directly.
10 points for practice each week.
Practice cards may be turned in late, but can not be "retried" per the redo policy.
See Practice page on this website for more information about practice grading.
These assignments will be given during class time. You will be given enough time to complete the assignment during class time in most instances. Most of these assignments will be worth 5 or 10 points, depending on the effort required.
Cross-curriculum assignments- math, science, english, social studies driven assignments to help us build connections between our music and the world around us.
Music Theory Assignments- Assignments demonstrating knowledge of terms, symbols, or the music we are learning.
These mini-playing checks will happen during class time, in person, in a variety of formats. These checks will be worth 5 or 10 points. During different parts of the school year, these checkpoints will be more or less frequent.
Scale Checks
Rhythm Checks
Small excerpts
Posture Checks
Shifting Checks
Usually, these checks are something Mr. Hegert feels can't be graded or discussed well as a practice playing check. Other times, they are too small to be a good playing check.
Playing checks will be completed twice per quarter outside of class time. They are worth 25 points and will be graded based on a rubric created and shared by Mr. Hegert. You may turn in a playing check in either of two ways:
Mr. Hegert will stay after school Thursday/Friday to listen to in person playing checks. If using this plan, be to Hegert's room before 3:15. If no one is here, he is leaving :)
Turn a video recording. We will do a test video before the first playing check is due to learn the process. I am hoping to utilize google classroom this year.
Missing checks will remain a 0 in the gradebook until they are completed.
All concerts will be worth 50 points in the grade book. Please see the "concerts" tab on this website for a list of concert dates and times.
Points- Concert grades will be based on the completion of a concert reflection in class the days after the concert. You may lose points by:
Unacceptable behavior at concert. On stage, or in audience. Penalty-10 points
Incomplete answers on reflection page. Penalty-5 points per question
Excused Absence. Penalty-50 points. May be made up through alternate assignment #1
Unexcused Absence. Penalty- 50 points. May be made up through alternate assignment #2.
Alternate Assignment #1
Watch the concert video (in class or using link). For each song our grade performed, write about one skill that we successfully demonstrated and about one skill that we need to continue impoving. After watching the concert, complete the concert reflection.
Alternate Assignment #2
Watch the concert video (in class or using link). For each song performed during the concert (all grades, including high school group where applicable) write about one skill that was successfully demonstrated and about one skill that we/they need to continue improving. After watching the concert, complete the concert reflection.
Excused vs. Unexcused reasons absence (if you don't see your reason below, ask Mr. Hegert). Absences from concerts must be communicated with Mr. Hegert at least 1 week in advance of the concert date, if possible. Absences not communicated in advance to Mr. Hegert will be treated as an unexcused absence.
