October is National Bullying Prevention Month. If you have not checked out our counseling lesson about bullying, please click over to "Tier 1 Lessons" and select "Peer Conflict or Bullying". All Irving students were able to receive this lesson last month. In classes, counselors and students had open discussions about bullying - what it looks like and how to report it.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at bgothie@lps.org or call (402) 436-1214.
Mr. G
Students ended Unit 1 with their Yellow Fever essays and unit assessment, so now all groups have begun Unit 2. This unit starts with social studies threads 2.1 and 2.2, where humans moved from hunting and gathering (Paleolithic Era) to discovering and spreading agriculture (Neolithic Era).
Students will have notes pages they go through together in class for 2.1 and 2.2 (many classes began these before fall break).
All classes will take their Unit 2 DCA (social studies assessment–50 points) within the next week. This test measures their ability to find evidence in a new text, explain their evidence, and provide a written response in their own words to support their answer.
Current Chapter: Chapter 3: Portions and Integers
Chapter Objectives: In chapter 3, students will use a powerful new tool for finding equivalent fractions; use percents, decimals, and fractions to describe a portion of a whole; represent portions as percents, decimals, and fractions with pictures, symbols, and words; and find the decimal form of a number when it is given as a percent or fraction.
Looking Ahead:

Current Chapter: Chapter 4: Variables and Ratios
Chapter Objectives: In chapter 4, students will use variables to generalize and to represent unknown quantities; write multiple expressions to describe a pattern and recognize whether the expressions are equivalent; find the value of an algebraic expression when the value of the variable is known; enlarge and reduce figures while maintaining their shapes; and use ratios to describe relationships between similar shapes.

Looking Ahead: Thermal Energy will take us through mid November to complete. Please check ParentVue to monitor your child’s progress in class.
Our next unit will cover Micro:bit computers. For this unit students will learn to use inputs that allow the computer to process information and give an output. Students will know how to create and use Variables, use if/then statements and forever loops. The big project for this unit will be creating a digital pet for students to play with.
Looking ahead: Bitsbox & Cue Robots!
In PE, students will continue with the soccer unit. students have learned the basic skills and rules of soccer and will be playing in small-sided soccer games which will end with a soccer tournament.
Each class ran the PACER last week and did well on the run. Each quarter students will run the PACER and teachers are hoping to see improvements on their scores!!
In art class, the 6th graders have been learning that artists incorporate pieces of their lives into their artwork. Next, students created a mind map of things they felt connected to relationships, life events, objects, and places. From there, each student will choose a topic meaningful to them and will create a piece of art using any medium of choice!
