Consistent Attendance is SO important!
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, one study found that the number of public school students who are chronically absent—meaning they miss at least 10 percent of days in a school year, whether excused or unexcused—has nearly doubled, from about 15 percent in the 2018-2019 school year to around 30 percent in 2021-2022. These large increases in absenteeism are widespread: every state for which data were available in this study saw significant increases in rates of chronic absenteeism between the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 school years. Disparities in levels of chronic absenteeism across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines also widened.
Research shows that school absences take a toll on grades and performance on standardized tests. Beyond test scores, irregular attendance can be a predictor of high school drop-out, which has been linked to poor labor market prospects, diminished health, and increased involvement in the criminal justice system. Students who are chronically absent are at higher risk for these adverse outcomes. - White House addresses attendance concerns
If you have questions about your student's attendance or need help improving their attendance, please reach out to me at arehm@lps.org or 402-436-1214. There are several strategies we can use to improve attendance and support your student at school.

English 8: Students are finishing The Rock and the River, our novel from Quarter 1.
English 8D: Students are starting the inventions unit
Math 8 (Regular): We have been working on Chapter 3: Graphs and Equations for the past few weeks. This chapter involves using tables, graphs, and rules to write and solve linear equations with variables on both sides. We are finishing up the chapter this week and after some review activities, we will take our Chapter 3 Test next week.
Math 8D (Diff): 2nd quarter began with Chapter 3, which focuses on simplifying expressions with exponents, exploring methods for rewriting polynomials such as (3x -2) (x + 4), solving equations with absolute values, and solving multi-variable equations for one variable. We also practiced using algebra tiles to physically and visually represent equations.
Our Chapter 3 Test will be on Friday, November 1st (with Chapter 2 Retention on Wednesday, November 6) . We will be doing some in-class review, and there will be other review materials posted in Google Classroom.
Geometry-D (Davenport): We started Chapter 4 on Monday, October 28. This chapter begins discussions of Trigonomic Ratios and Probability.
The Chapter 4/3R Test will be November 11 & 12.
We will learn:
The trigonometric ratio of tangent.
How the tangent ratio is connected to the slop of a line.
How to apply trigonometric ratios to find missing measurements in right triangles.
How to model real world situations with right triangles and us trigonometric ratios to solve problems
Several ways to model probability situations, such as tree diagrams and area models.
How to formalize methods for computing probabilities of unions, intersections and complements of events.
How to find expected value in games of chance.
Students in PE are Learning the activity of flag football while developing and reinforcing basic locomotor skills. Skills tHAT ARE BEING TAUGHT ARE THE CORRECT PROCEDURE TO GRIP AND HOLD THE FOOTBALL, HOW TO CATCH A PASS AND WORKING ON PULLING A FLAG FOR FLAG FOOTBALL.
Students in Health are finishing unit 1 this week with their DCA and will start Unit 2 next week. Unit 2 is about Nutrition and exercise and the chapters in the unit are as followed:
Analysis of fast food
Supporting and moving the body
Moving and exchanging substances
Managing your weight
Having a healthy body image
Knowing and understanding types of Physical activity
Rewards Secondary: We finished up Unit 3 and will be moving into Unit 4 focusing on many reading and writing skills including sentence structure, sentence types, paragraph structure and writing, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
Rewards Plus: We finished up Unit 3 and will be moving into Unit 4 where we will practice a variety of reading and writing skills surrounding information about the British Empire.
***Please continue to encourage your child to read at home, practice spelling and to practice fluency***
We continue to study sound and waves in class. Our big question is “How do sound waves carry energy?”. Recently, we have used an oscilloscope to analyze sounds in the lab, calculated differences in loudness from differences in sound energy, and analyzed graphs of perception of loudness.
Next week, we will review models of sound waves and energy, and learn how wavelength, frequency, and wave speed are related to each other for electromagnetic waves. Students will also take the DCA on sound on Wednesday, November 6. We will begin our next unit (Forces at a Distance) the following week.
Students are wrapping up their unit on the American Revolution. Diff students complete a Document based question (DBQ) as their cumulative assessment.
For the next two weeks, the students learn about the constitution for the U.S. was created and what it meant going forward.
We just finished unit C that focused on describing someone else and ourselves. Your student’s were able to write 10-12 descriptive sentences in Spanish on their Unit C test this week.
Our next unit will focus on Animals and their habitats.
