In art class we have been busy learning about the art history of Pop Art and artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Claes Oldenburg, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol. Students have been focused brainstorming various sculpture ideas where they will choose an everyday ordinary object inspired by the artists above to sculpt out of clay. The object they choose should have meaning and personal significance.
Wow! Quarter 1 has been a whirlwind of learning, and I am so proud of our students. They are working hard and making a lot of growth both academically and behaviorally.
Students are just starting to present their speeches about a newspaper or magazine article they read on the Gale database related to the topic of Teens and Social Media. The main focus for this speech is to have eye contact with the audience. They can use a notecard. The goal is not to look at the notecard and read, but instead to look at the notecard, put it down, and then talk while looking up. This can be challenging even for adults, but they are practicing to improve.
Next, we’ll finish up our unit with visual thinking journals, a celebration day, and a short podcast.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. If you have not checked out our counseling lesson about bullying, please click over to "Tier 1 Lessons" and select "Peer Conflict or Bullying". All Irving students were able to recieve this lesson last month. In classes, counselors and students had open discussions about bullying - what it looks like and how to report it.
If you have any questions about bullying or any other issues, please do not hesitate to reach out to me by phone or email.

Both English 7 and 7D classes have been hard at work learning how to be a reader. This included reading a class novel, learning strategies to help notice and note what they are thinking about as they read, and how to journal those thoughts. Students will be asked to read two books during the second quarter. For 7D students, one of these books will be a class novel, a choice between The Martian, or Ender’s Game.
Classes have also been completing vocabulary exercises based on Greek and Latin root words and prefixes. This teaches students how to decode new words. These lessons will continue throughout the second quarter and into the second semester.
While reading will continue in the 2nd quarter, we will place a greater emphasis on learning how to be a writer. This will include writing a personal narrative during the first half of the quarter and an argumentative essay during the second half.
English 7: We will start the quarter by being introduced to Latin! We will focus on two Latin roots per lesson and see how they are the base of many words we know. For reading, we are focusing on nonfiction and fiction pieces about the earth and climate. We will be gathering evidence for an eventual paper analyzing how individual plays a role in shaping the environment through their daily choices.
English 7D: This group will also start their Latin lessons. Students will eventually get into the routine of the lessons and quizzes and know what to expect. We also get to start our next novel, The Martian. This will take up most of our reading for the quarter, and we will attempt to answer the question of how the main character overcomes obstacles using flexibility and resilience.
Students have been learning about tobacco use (different forms of tobacco products, nicotine and other chemicals, etc.) and its health effects.
This week, students started learning about vaping and its consequences. We will continue to practice refusal skills as a part of our lesson so students are aware of what to do when offered to use E-cigarettes.
Math 7: Students will take the Benchmark B Test on or around October 31st. After the test, students will begin Chapter 4 which covers variables, proportions, equations and more.
Math 7D: Students completed the Unit C Benchmark Test today. In Chapter 7, students will focus on proportions, percents, scaling quantities and creating integer coefficients. The next test will be on or around November 8th.
In PE, students will continue the with the soccer unit. Students have learned the basic skills and rules of soccer and will be playing in small sided soccer games and will end with a soccer tournament.
Each class ran the PACER last week and did well on the run. Each quarter students will run the PACER and teachers are hoping to see improvements on their scores!!
