The SQA recognise that young people with additional support needs may require adaptations to their assessment conditions to allow them to fully demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding required for the qualification.
At Alva Academy, we have a robust protocol for the allocation of additional assessment arrangements. We have clear guidance for staff outlined in our Additional Assessment Arrangements Policy. Subject teaching staff, ASN Teaching Staff, Support Staff and the Senior Management team all have a role in the provision of additional assessment arrangements.
If your child has an additional support need, the ASN team will communicate suggested assessment supports to the subject teaching staff. Over the course of the academic year, subject teachers will gather evidence supporting the need for these arrangements in their own subject area by completing the form shown below. This evidence will be verified by the ASN team who will then implement these supports for both prelim and final SQA examinations. Please note that your child is unlikely to have the same additional assessment arrangements in place for every subject due to the case by case nature of the evidence gathering process.
In November 2021, Alva Academy's Additional Assessment Arrangement policy and procedure was audited by the SQA. We are delighted that our policy was identified as an area of good practice with the SQA report stating that "The centre are to be commended on their current Policy, Processes, Documentation and timelines AND their approach to continuous improvement. "
If you would like to discuss your child's additional assessment arrangements in any more detail, please don't hesitate to get in touch. All contact details can be found in our ASN Departmental handbook.
