Dyscalculia means that a young person will have difficulties with all areas of mathematics. Dyscalculia makes maths challenging to process and understand.
Symptoms range from difficulty with counting and basic mental maths to trouble with telling time and direction. Click on the picture for more information.
Here at Alva Academy we have a number of assessment tools that we use to screen pupils for dyscalculia. Before any screening starts one of our ASN teachers will consult with parents/carers to discuss what their concerns are and meet with the young person themselves to discuss how they feel about different areas of maths- this involves completing a checklist with the young person. We also consult with the pupil’s maths teacher and look at the pupil’s history of maths learning.
A pupil with dyscalculia should be supported in the classroom by:
Using concrete materials
Maths tasks being broken down into stages
Ensuring young people frequently revisit and practise what they have learnt
Extra support for dyscalculia can also be suggested for when the young person sits their SQA examinations.
