Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is defined by the ‘core’ signs of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness which can combine or present individually.
Medical studies have shown that there are important developmental, structural and functional differences between the brains of people with and without ADHD, altering the prefrontal cortex’s ability to function and process essential tasks. This can affect attention, alertness and memory, resulting in the symptoms of ADHD.
ADHD is a professionally diagnosed condition, students may take daily prescribed medication to help them focus on learning during the day.
A pupil with ADHD should be supported in Alva Academy classes by:
Providing smaller tasks.
Timetables and routine.
Instructions given one at a time.
Encouragement, praise for success and support.
Extra supports such as a separate accommodation; supervised breaks; prompt and extra time may be given when the young person sits their SQA examinations.
