Young people with language impairments may have trouble understanding or being understood through all forms of communication- verbal, non-verbal and written. There are different types of language disorders:
A receptive disorder is when someone doesn’t understand what is being communicated to them.
An expressive disorder is when someone has trouble communicating thoughts and feelings to others.
A cognitive-communication disorder affects your ability to remember things, pay attention, solve problems, organise thoughts, and more.
At Alva we have strong links with our colleagues in the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) NHS Forth Valley Service. Our link Speech and Language Therapist, Chantelle Dobson, attends the school building each week and is available for consultation with staff, families and pupils. Our class teachers are supported by Chantelle to plan and deliver the curriculum for our learners with Speech and Language difficulties. We also have the facility to refer young people directly to the Speech and Language Therapy service should we have concerns regarding their Speech or Language Development.
A pupil with a Speech or Language impairment may be supported in the classroom by;
Using visuals
Chunking down information into smaller sections
Allowing the pupil extra time to process information
Additional supports during SQA assessments can also be provided for young people with Speech and Language difficulties by the implementation of Alva Academy’s Additional Assessment Arrangements Policy.
