Conflicting land-use pressures on coastlines, including commercial land uses (tourism, industry and housing) and conservation measures
One case study to illustrate the roles of, and outcomes for, coastal stakeholders
Management of coral reefs and mangrove swamps, including different stakeholder perspectives on their use and value

TASK Prepare for the following exam question. Note although it does not make reference to case study/s you must use them.
Part 1 - Understand the various Hard and Soft Engineering options
Part 2 - Relate these to a case study of the Holderness area of the UK.
Essential Understandings 1:
Be able to identify between different Hard and Soft Engineering Options and the pros and cons of each. Note - you must be able to refer to Cliff Stabilisation (this is something often missing from some text books, make sure you understand it
Good Presentation - don't need all slides but it is a fantastic overview with many good case studies.
This section of the syllabus recognises that:
a) Coastal margins suffer from marine and sub-aerial erosion
b) They also are vulnerable to flooding due to storm surges, which will increase with sea level rise.
c) some places choose to manage these coastlines using a range of strategies - the choice is made as a result of cost-benefit analysis.
d) There are a range of hard and soft engineering options - all of which have their own pros and cons.
e) To manage a coastline, the whole littoral cell needs taking into account as well as all the views of the different stakeholders, which is why many plans are called "Integrated coastal management plans" in which they integrate different views as well as the overall effects management may have on other areas.
Resources
BBC Revision Site - this is essential and contains most of the information you need
Another revision site - good for pros and cons
Resource 1: Chapter from book - you will need this to complete some of the information.
Great Resource: https://esriukeducation.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=760af30c37a245acbd546cf42c7ec0cb
a) What are the pressures on the coastline that means that it needs management in the first place. (relate to reasons it erodes so fast and why this affects people in the area)
b) Who are the decision makers as to what management occurs - what considerations do they have to make?
c) how has the coastline been managed in terms of erosion control.
d) evaluate the effectiveness of the management for all concerned.
You need to refer to specific places, cost-benefit analysis - why some areas are protected and others are not. What conflicts does this cause.
When evaluating the effectiveness of past management - you need to look at the latest thinking on management of the area.
Option 1 Holderness - Using videos
TASK 1 - Watch all the videos above and answer the questions relating to the video on this sheet
TASK 2: Prepare for the exam question. at the top of the page.
Other Information to Read through to come up with a good case study......
Geoactive - update - Read to get information on the different areas that are protected - use this to annotate map.
Geofactsheet - Fantastic Resource - this MUST be used and will be your main source of information.
1 page summary - specific locations of coastal management - can add to map.
Option: Note taking on a Map - summarise main points on a copy of this map of the area.
Time for Geography - Video Answer
Alternative Task using Map on the left
Make a copy of the map on the left and annotate it to add all the relevant coastal management.
Add using
a) more information from the video below
b) Click on the photos of different places on this site (at the bottom of the page.
c) Add further information from Geoactive - update -
One case study to illustrate the roles of, and outcomes for, coastal stakeholders
2023/24 - Use Tioman
Task: Read through the answer to the question on the new IB Prepared book that relates to this section of the syllabus.
Create an annotated map of the area showing conflicts and management solutions.
Use this to rewrite the answer from this page to add further information using Studland Bay that moves it up to a level 9/10.
Resources:
The answer page that you will be rewriting.
GIS resource: This is produced using ArGIS - a free resource. Think about using it for your case studies.
Page from IB book - ok but not in enough detail
Geofile - fantastic resource.
For Management of conflicting Pressures on a Coastline - Studland (see above) -Intro vid,
This is also another good video
page 9 of this revision Bitesize
Royal Geographical Society case study on this. Page
Alternatively: Rewrite the answer using information just from Tioman, or Soufriere Bay example below.. Folder
This is a very good case study you could also use.
It is from your Geography IB Books. Go through
Where are the conflicts
What was the resolution
What is the SMMA
Why was land use Zoning used?
Evaluation of success

Document to fill in - Google Slide - good for case study.
1. Recap - 15 minutes - go over the following questions in pairs - how many can you finish in that time.
2. Check the Answers.
3. You will go over the guided answers in the IB Answers book for the two questions related to this section of the syllabus. You will write them using information from the following case studies.
For Coastal Management Schemes (erosion control) - Holderness
For Management of conflicting Pressures on a Coastline - Studland (see above) -Intro vid, GIS resource: and page 9 of this revision Bitesize and if all else fails this.
Use information either from Tioman (your notes) or go through the Studeland example and rewrite the answer to the exam question from this page and move it up to a level 9/10.
Look at the exam question for may 2019 below...
Detailed examples of both ecosystems and their issues
Starter: How much do you already know about Coral Reefs and Mangroves? Take the Multiple choice quizzes below.
Singapore Text Book - Good resource for both - Chapter
What are they
Where are they found and in what conditions
Why are they used by humans?
What environmental and economic benefit do they have.
What factors are leading to their decline
One case study of an area where the ecosystem is being managed. You can use the information below to focus on specific locations and fill in this document.
Identify the stakeholders and their opinions
Describe and explain the issues and management in this location.
Task: Find out about the Mangrove Action Project and its work in Thailand.
What is their method of Mangrove restoration called?
How does it differ from others?
Where can it be found?
Thailand Case Study - Resources below
Video 1 - simple intro and Video 2 - more detail. You can also get this information from the website link above.
Self Guided Lesson
Who are the different stakeholders in Tioman
What pressures are put on coral by different stakeholders.
What are the management decisions that have been made.
Discuss how this case study can be seen in relation to the IB Geography 4 P's (Power, processes, place and Possibility)
******Folder with many articles on Tioman and Tourism******
Most of the important aspects relating to this case study need to focus on
Government policies
local stakeholders - role of dive shops, hotels in maintaining biodiversity.
increasing access to recycling
Building of new reefs using reef balls - this is done in the main bay in Tioman
Work of NGOs - see below - Here is a link to a document of notes I took from Alvins talk (in 2019) from Cintai Tioman. What more can you add from the 2024 talk/inteview!
You should also be aware of non legislative ways in which coral reefs can be managed by actually restoring coral and growing them.
***** Note - The IB Text book has a good section on this, so if it is the least that you do at least read and make notes on pages 85-89 *****
This section will be dealt with when looking at ocean management futures.....
