Rashad Malika Indriadi
Hello, my name is Rashad, and I am a student in Y10B at Sekolah Cikal Lebak Bulus. For my personal project, I created small furniture accessories out of scrap materials to raise waste consciousness during the pandemic. I picked this project because I am fascinated by nature, particularly aquatic creatures which are relevant to the ecosystem. In addition, I am passionate about design and the arts, and I intend to use this project to hone my design skills.
Specific
What do you want to accomplish?
Raise awareness of the waste generated by people during the pandemic and inspire the target audience to reduce waste by creating an object, all while strengthening my design and artistic talents.
Measurable
How will you track your progress?
Using a personal timetable and journals for brainstorming my ideas, updating the project timeline, and capturing images of the progress/work.
Achievable
What are the three steps can you take to reach your goal?
The first step is the initiation phase, during which I will establish the project's purpose, followed by the planning phase, which will include the procedures required to achieve the project's goals, and finally the execution phase, which will primarily focus on the creation of the final product.
Realistic
Why is this goal important to you?
It incorporates something I am extremely enthusiastic about, namely arts and design, as well as an essential environmental concern.
Time-Bound
When will you reach your goal?
It will almost definitely finish in April 2022, when I should have accomplished my aim.
Thinking Skills
Specifically, creative and critical thinking are required for product creation and problem solutions throughout the process.
Communication Skills
When consulting with experts, interviewing friends, consulting with a mentor, and asking for feedback.
Research Skills
During the inquiry phase, I mostly used this ability through web research, surveys, interviews, etc.
Throughout the project, I collaborated with two experts who assisted in the design and development of the product, which is carried out on a nearly weekly basis. We largely discussed the product's design, materials, and manufacturing process, as well as the necessary equipments. Furthermore, I also interviewed a few of my friends about how they dealt with waste during the pandemic.
I began to have a better grasp of what the design should look like and how I'm going to construct the product after consulting with my experts and doing interviews with my friends. I also gained more information on my target audience from the interviews with my friends.
Regarding the design, consulting with expert 1.
Scavenging scrap materials from households
Brainstorming design ideas by making a Pinterest mood board
Sketching the design by hand
Using Sketchup to create a digital/3D drawing of the design
Making the actual product out of wood scraps and tools like a sandpaper machine, a saw machine, a drill, and a variety of other items
Completing the product
The finished goods, which include a Candle Holder and a Pencil Holder
Challenges
Because I was unfamiliar with the tools and equipment, the most difficult part of this project was probably constructing the product itself. The investigation step was especially difficult as well because it requires a great deal of communication, which is what I struggle with the most.
Personal Impact
This initiative has influenced me to become a more ecologically conscious individual who uses fewer items that may result in waste. It also had an impact on my design skills, which I believe will help me academically in the future.
Community Impact
Because the purpose of the project is to raise awareness of pandemic waste, it should hopefully influence the community’s environmental behavior. They can profit from this because my initiative gives them ideas for what they can make out of used materials to help reduce waste.
Your Next Plan to Sustain the Project
As I aim to specialize on this medium in the future, I believe this subject of sustainability and environmental sensitivity will continue in my future design efforts. This is supported by the importance of incorporating sustainability into products and our everyday lives and my strong interest in design.
