➺ Specific
I wanted to raise awareness about Indonesia's stigma around youth mental health and educate on the importance of youth mental health through a short documentary video. The film attempts to educate people about mental health and to break down the stigma and misunderstanding around mental health in Indonesia, particularly among teens.
➺ Measurable:
Making a timetable is the most important aspect of keeping track of my progress. The timeline is a precise schedule that shows how I will spend my allotted time in creating my progress. This schedule is necessary for tracking my progress and determining what I needed to accomplish next.
Setting a project's objectives allowed me to keep track of my progress. I was able to set goals for what I needed to accomplish by writing down the project's objectives. I also used reminder tools such as writing down a to-do list which helped me to remind myself and motivate myself to reach the goals that I had set.
I can be guided through the making of my project by communicating with my supervisor. By providing me with feedback and advice on my development, my supervisor assisted me in keeping track of my progress and determining how far I've progressed.
➺ Achievable
To attain my goal, I need a plan, a clear vision of how I want my project to turn out, and a plan for how I'll get there. Because I want to make a short documentary film, I'll have to go through a lot of steps because making a documentary film isn't easy, such as writing the script and storyboard, which includes a complete overview of my project. Setting a clear vision of my project helps me keep focused in achieving my goals because these processes are not always easy.
➺ Realistic
This objective is very important to me because I believe that more awareness and understanding of youth mental health is necessary. Many young people needed to be heard. Therefore by making this project, hopefully, people will be more educated and acknowledge the importance of mental health. By becoming educated on mental health and well-being, particularly from the perspective of youth, can help to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness in society.
➺ Time-bound
Associated with the timetable I have made prior, in October I started to gather all the information's I need from: observations, surveys, interviews and other forms of documentation. Taking action, such as, the filming process and editing process started in November. By December, my project was published, uploaded, and released to the public.
ATL Skills
Communication Skills
Developing communication skill is necessary in my project because in my project as I went through a lot of communication with experts and interviewee’s for the short documentary film. Hence, through doing so I was able to develop my communication skills.
Thinking Skills
I was able to develop thinking skills through researching about my topic to gain more knowledge about mental health and the stigma surrounding mental health in Indonesia. Although, I did not specifically aim towards developing research skills, however, through the process of researching, gaining research skills is necessary to develop my thinking skills. I also developed my thinking skills through the filming process itself as writing the script and storyboard requires a lot of brainstorming.
Self-management skills
My self-management skills is improved through the process of making the product itself which requires a lot of commitment and discipline. Therefore, I learned how to manage myself to achieve my goal.
Interviews with Experts
Pak Agung Rachmadi
For the first interview, I reached out to Pak Agung Rachmadi, school counselor with a degree in Psychology. The interview provided information regarding why educating and raising awareness about mental health is important. From this interview, I was able to understand that raising awareness about mental health as well as mental health education is important. The interview taught me how to effectively promote the importance of mental health.
Ibu Dani Sadatun
I reached out to Ibu Dani Sadatun, psychologist. Through this interview, I was able to be guided on what kinds of information needed to be included in the documentary film. She also taught me how to write the short documentary film and how the documentary should be structured. The interview also suggested lists of experts that should be interviewed for the documentary film.
Process
Reaching out to interviewees : At the beginning of November, I reached out to 7 sources in total for the interview that will be included in the short documentary film. The seven sources include two experts and five teenagers. For the experts, I reached out to Bapak Edward Andriyanto, youth therapist, and Ibu Ika Rahajeng, youth therapist. For the teenagers, I reached out to five friends of mine.
Pre-Production Process: In creating the short documentary film, I went through three stages of the pre-production process. Writing the structure plan of the short documentary film is the first stage in the production process. After arranging the structure, I moved on to the second stage, which involved writing the script. The third stage of the process is creating the final structure.
Production Process: After the three stages have been completed, I moved on to the fourth and fourth stages which is the shooting/filming process which took place on November 25, 2021 until December 13, 2021 . I reached out to seven interviewees; two experts and five teenagers.
Editing: After I completed the production process, I began editing the film which took about one week to complete. My short documentary film was finally uploaded on on December 28, 2021.
Challenges
✫ Time-management
Staying committed to the timeline is probably one of the biggest challenges in making my project. The process can be quite draining when I have to balance my personal project with my school work. This caused me to lose motivation which manifested in having poor time-management skills. The poor time management made it difficult for me to stay on track with the schedule.
✫ Loss of motivation
It is difficult for me to stay motivated during the process of making my project, especially towards the end of the process when I experienced feelings of burnout. Losing motivation also caused me to have poor time management skills, in which I tend to procrastinate a lot.
✫ Writers Block
When making my structure plan and script, the process isn't always granted with an easy path. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by being stuck in the writing process; not being able to come up with new ideas which made me feel like I couldn't move forward with the process which led to frustration.
Personal Impact
My personal project, with its purpose of addressing and educating the issue of mental health and the stigma surrounding mental illness in Indonesia, has taught me a lot further about mental health and its importance. I was able to learn more about mental health from the sources I interviewed during the filming process, as well as understand and experience the process of making a documentary film. Overall, I think the experience of making this project has been very valuable for me, there are a lot of things that I have learned.
Community Impact
In accordance with my goal, my short documentary film has made a great impact on the audience. The audience was able to understand the message that the film is trying to communicate, they were educated by the film, they understood the importance of mental health, they gained new insights into the stigma surrounding mental illness or mental health, and some of them also found the film beneficial because they are also able to learn how to deal with their own mental issues from the film. I was able to observe the impact this film had on the audience based on the survey I conducted.
˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ Next Plan ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚
I found the process of making the short documentary very fun and enjoyable. I enjoy making films that could help and benefit others as well as myself.
Resonating with my interest in film and mental health, hopefully, I can sustain my project by making more films in the future relating to the topic of mental health.
