For my personal project, I want to research and investigate the effects of pressure to students, why students can develop pressure, if pressure is negative or positive, and how to deal with pressure. Then, I will organize my findings, then producing a 3 episode long video series about pressure and publish it on YouTube, with each video being about 6-10 minutes in length.
The creation of the success criteria required research and other references as well. The research was needed in order to get familiar with the product I want to make, and the standards and quality that a product like mine usually has. For example, A documentary requires interviewees and people to be in the documentary. It also requires a camera and an editing software. The references I took when creating the success criteria for my product were documentary and video essays in youtube from Vox, Vice and also took reference from youtubers who had less budget such as
During the creation of my project, I chose Self-Management skills as a skill that I think is needed, and one that I want to improve. I divided the aspects of Self-Management into two main parts, time management and general file organizing. Both aspects of self-management helped a lot in finishing my project, as time management helped me stay in track and helped me follow and use my time appropriately when it comes to creating my video essay. File management and organization helped me in saving time for editing and scriptwriting. By organizing my files, all the clips and files I need to open during the editing or scriptwriting process, such as research results, interview scenes, external clips are already in specified locations. It saves time in browsing/trying to find each file during the editing and script writing process.
I applied time management skills through creating a schedule and planning the project, dividing and putting a timeline of the steps that I need to do in order to create the final product. I applied file organization and file management skills through creating folders, google drive and google docs files as a compilation portal, so that if I ever need anything, I can open the single folder or the google docs file in order to find it.
Communication skills are also a crucial part of my project, while being something that I wanted to improve. I chose communication skills as an ATL skill for this project, since in order to create this project, I needed to communicate with others, as well as communicate to the audience in my video. Communication skills are needed in the research part as I had to communicate to my mentors, teachers and peers for their perspective on the topic, as well as contacting them for possible experts that they might know. Communication skills were also used in the video itself. I communicated what I have researched in a form of a video essay, with the target audience of a general audience.
I applied the communication skills in communicating with my mentors and my teachers in order to find experts and psychologist who understands my topic clearly. I also communicated with the school counselor in order to get his perspective on the topic. Besides this, verbal and visual communications were used in the creation of my video. Visual communication were used in the supporting visuals of my videos, whereas verbal communication was used in the videos.
Since the nature of my product is a video essay, research is necessary in the creation of the product to act as substance. Since the topic is new to me, I had to conduct a background research on the topic of pressure and stress. This research acts as a guideline in order to understand my interviewees, so that I can engage in a meaningful conversation between the interviewee, for both the experts and the students. For the experts, I interviewed three different experts in order to get many perspectives, so that the information is more reliable . This works the same for the students I interviewed. I interviewed 3 different students with varying backgrounds and interests in order to get different perspectives on their thoughts on stress and experience with it.
During the interview, I gained and learned many information about my own topic, but also gained valuable experience in terms of making connections and interviewing people that I don't know of. Things such as Eustress and Distress, there being positive stress and etc. As for things I learned about interviewing in general, coming into the interviews, I was very nervous coming into the interview. But, it was not as I expected at all, the interview went smoothly and the interviewees werent mean/scary.
After conducting my personal research, I created research/interview questions that I want to know more from my initial research, that I can ask the experts and the interviewees. The question listing for interviewing did not really require brainstorming, since I already had questions from my personal research. I used the questions and further inquiry and list them into a list for questions that I can ask in the interviews.
The creation of my product included many different process, which I had mention before on this page. The investigation process is essentially a process of collecting information that is related to my topic and the creation of my product. This includes researching on how to create a video, researching on the topic itself such as interviewees and background research, as well as references on what I want my video essay to look like.
The writing part of my project is the process of gathering the information that I have researched during the investigation phase, and then compiling, simplifying and organizing the information so that it suits the format of a video essay, and so that it is understandable by the general audience. The writing process also includes thinking of ways to help explain my point or my explanation through visual means. This includes visual aids, video references, or pop culture references.
Editing and Publishing are the parts that I am most unfamiliar with. This is because I rarely edit videos and I have never felt confident putting anything that I have created to be accessible for the public. Editing was particularly tough as I already had little time to work with due to the poor understanding of editing and scheduling. Because of this, the editing might feel rushed.
I personally think that I mostly struggled during the planning phase and the effects of poor planning. During the planning phase, although I researched in order to create the success criteria, I didnt give enough time for some parts of the project, such as editing as I mentioned. Aside from this, editing was also a challenge, as I ran into many difficulties such as audio quality issues, since I decided to not spend any money for the creation of my product.
Throughout this project, the impact to myself were mostly on the improvement of my ATL skills, as well as the knowledge that I gained regarding my topic. I'd say that the biggest impact the project has had on me is in terms of communication and organization. Throughout this project, I learned to be more motivated and learned tro try something new.
The impact to others or community can be viewed through the response form that I have created for my video series. Through reading the response forms, many people said that they have learned new knowledge about the topic in my video and will be looking to apply said knowledge that they have gained from watching my video into their personal life.
