My goal for this personal project is to raise awareness regarding the air pollution issue in Jakarta by making a mini/short documentary film that will explain and share a message regarding the issue and the possible solutions we can do to solve it as a community. I decided that this will be my personal project because I have always enjoyed watching educational/documentary films and I also feel like air pollution is a big problem in Jakarta, and can be a huge threat to both humans and the environment.
I plan for my documentary film to be uploaded publicly to Youtube and will be at least 15 minutes long. I chose 15 minutes as my targeted duration for the documentary because I feel like that is the perfect time to inform as much information to the audience as possible without making the film too long and boring. I also plan to have at least 200 views for my documentary film, because it seems like an achievable goal to spread a message regarding air pollution. Through this, I hope that my personal project can share the message and raise awareness regarding air pollution in Jakarta, and that the audience starts to take action to minimize air pollution.
I started the learning stage of my personal project by doing research and investigation regarding the topics I want to put in my documentary film, so that I can understand what I will write about and that I will be sure that the information said in the documentary is valid. I started the process by listing down all the different sub-topics of air pollution that I want to research in this investigation phase. After listing down the sub-topics I wanted to research, I then searched online on those sub-topics and gathered all of the information into one document. For this first part of the research, I mostly relied on articles, government sites, and research documents, most of which are considered secondary sources.
After finding all the information I can get through online research, the next part of my research includes an expert interview, for the purpose of validating all the information I found online, and also to add as one of the expert interview scenes in my documentary film. After searching for an interviewee, I found Ibu Hernani, which is an Environmental Engineering professor at the University of Trisakti. I ended up choosing her because the field of environmental engineering is very much related to solutions to environmental problems, such as air pollution. As a preparation for the interview, I made a list of questions for me to ask her during the interview.
During the interview, I gained a lot of insight regarding topics of air pollution, specifically those I didn't manage to find in my online research, such as the most dangerous type of air pollution and the possible solutions to prevent air pollution that is suitable in Jakarta. I also received some important interview parts that I can put in the documentary, which will be important since the interview can validate all the information I have been stating in the documentary.
After gathering all pieces of information I needed, I started the product-making stage by making an outline and a script, which will help me sort out all the things I will say during the documentary film. For the outline, I divided my documentary into seven different parts, each with its own content and significance. After managing what information I will put in each part by making the outline, I moved on to making the script based on what I have wrote in the outline. There are many aspects I have put in the script, which include the narration, visuals, and interviews scenes, all of which I think will be relevant in the documentary and will help me manage all the information I will share with the audience.
After writing finishing the script, I moved on to record all of the scenes I have according to the script. In this part, I mostly just read off of my script, considering I have everything I need to say all planned out in it. I also started to find different stock footage, especially those containing actual air pollution in Jakarta, since that will be a crucial part of the documentary, and it can help visualize the different types of air pollution in Jakarta.
I then moved on to the editing process, in which I compiled all of the narrations, videos, and footage I have into one video file, and add in extra images and illustrations to help visualize the narrations in the documentary. After the fully-edited video is finalized, I made a feedback form using google forms, which I will put in the descriptions tab of the final Youtube video, so that I can receive feedback for my video. After that, I publicly uploaded the final version of the documentary to Youtube alongside the feedback form.
During the entire process of learning and product creation, I mainly used two different ATL skills. The first ATL skill I used is research skills. I first used this skill during my research phase, in which research skill helps me formulate research questions, and also find reliable information on the internet. I also used research skills later on in the interview phase, in which I used the skill to formulate and ask questions to the interviewee that I would have never found the answer to if I were to search online. In my opinion, this skill is very important to my project because it helped me formulate the questions I want to know about more and also find the answers to my questions using reliable sources.
The second ATL skill I used is communication skill. Throughout the entire project, I mostly used communication skills to communicate with my mentor regarding the progress of my project. I also used it to communicate with my interviewee before and during the interview, in which I used the communication skills to ask her the questions I want to ask during the interview process. I also used communication skills when I am making the script and narrating the documentary, in which it helps me to find a good way to convey a message to the audience and also find an interesting way to communicate to the audience so that they don't get easily bored while watching the documentary.
There are some challenges that I faced during the process of making this project. The first challenge is time management, in which halfway through the project, I was unable to find an interviewee, which made me late on doing. other parts of this project. I think the main problem is that I don't know anyone that is an expert in air pollution, which made me have to rely on or ask my parents whether they know any experts on the subject. However, I was able to finish my project eventually, because I was able to finish the recording and editing stages faster than I expected to.
The second challenge I faced during the project-making phase is the promoting phase of my project. Even though the view count in my Youtube video is well over 200 views, there aren't a lot of people that did my feedback form, and in the end, I only receive 7 responses in my feedback form. This made it hard for me to evaluate what the audience thinks of my documentary film since there was only a small percentage of my viewers that did the survey. If I had the chance to re-do this project again, I would probably encourage the viewers to do my feedback form by also putting the feedback form link when sending the link of my video to my relatives. This way, I think more people would consider doing the forms since I think not a lot of people opened the descriptions tab of my Youtube video.
In terms of knowledge, the impact of this personal project on me is that I am now able to understand the causes/effects of air pollution, and I can now understand the possible and alternative solutions we can all do to prevent air pollution from spreading or worsening. I learned that through researching and interviewing experts, which lets me widen my knowledge regarding air pollution. From this personal project, I also learned how to properly make a documentary film, and how to properly convey a message to the audience through a documentary film.
The impact of this project on the community is that other people will now understand and be more aware of the dangers of air pollution, and also how we as a community can solve this issue. Using my feedback forms, I also learned that the majority of my viewers ended up understanding the message and contents of the documentary.
