Courses Developed & Taught

Dr. Brown has developed three courses that are part of the Health Behavior and Policy PhD Student Curriculum. Currently Dr. Brown is teaching SBH 634 Physician-Patient Interaction while SBHD 692 and SBHD 640 are being taught by other faculty.

SBHD 634 Physician-Patient Interactions

This course educates students on theories that support communication research, different methodologies and practical applications of these theories and methods to guide research development in this area. Students will be given the opportunity to analyze published research

SBHD 692 Qualitative Research Methods

This course covers theories, principles and applications to enable high quality research using Qualitative research methods. The course is designed to educate students abo5ut theories of qualitative research and different methodologies used to gather qualitative data.

SBHD 640 Seminar in Mixed Methods Research

This course provides an overview of best practices in mixed methods research in the social and behavioral sciences and serves as a methods capstone course for SBS doctoral students.0

Courses Taught

Dr. Brown is currently teaching SBHD 609- Research Methods in Social and Behavioral Science and has taught SBHD 690 and SBHD 605.

SBHD 609 Research Methods in Social and Behavioral Sciences

This course addresses research as a systematic method for examining questions derived from theory and practice. Major topics covered include the philosophy of scientific inquiry; logic of causal inference; observational and experimental research designs; sampling; threats to internal and external validity; and survey research methods.

SBHD 690 HBP Student Seminar

There are two main goals of the department seminar. First, to assist students in understanding the intersections between health policy and behavior and to encourage students to explore the benefits and challenges associated with team science. Second, this class will provide students with information, insights and/ or skills that can inform and benefit your professional development.

SBHD 605 Introduction to Social and Behavioral Heath

This course is required for all MPH students and addresses the influence of social and behavioral factors impacting public health. Material covered emphasizes the theoretical foundations of social and behavioral health as well as health promotion and disease prevention interventions.
