Course Description:
Visual Arts fosters interest and enjoyment in making art and interpreting historical and contemporary art. This course offers a wide range of opportunities for students to develop their interests and to be self-motivated, active learners. Visual Arts provides students with strong discipline based knowledge, fundamental skills, creative expertise and a learning mindset recognised as essential capabilities for the 21st century.
Students explore the work of traditional and contemporary artists who are using new technologies and reinventing old ones. Student’s create artworks that are derived from their experiences, interpretations and concerns about local and global issues.
Two units are studied in the Year 11 course. Conceptual themes may include: Landscape, Still Life, Portraiture, social commentary and/or personal experiences.
Students develop a Body of Work in a variety of mediums which may include -
Pastels, pencils, charcoal and mixed media
Acrylic paints, oil paints & watercolour
Pottery
Digital photography
Lino printing & etching
Sculpture or Installation
Object / jewellery design
Students create a Body of Work exploring a concept that is developed based on their own interests and ideas, in collaboration with their teacher. We encourage students to choose a concept of interest to them and to utilise materials they have shown skills in, whilst honing and developing their skills in mediums they wish to improve on.
In Art Theory, students study five case studies which explore the work of several Australian and international artists. Short and extended response answers are developed to build student's skills in interpreting and understanding art.

Creation of a Body of Work
Use of a Visual Arts Process Diary to plan, research and reflect on artworks and artistic process
Written theory work exploring and analysing the work of selected artists
External Assessment:
HSC Examination: 1.5 hours - 50%
Body of Work - 50%
Employment and Further Education opportunities: There are many levels of entry into occupations in the Visual Arts, some possibilities are Fine Arts, craftsperson, arts administrator, Art Gallery Director, curator, Architect, Animator, Graphic Designer, Interior Decorator, jeweller, art conservator, makeup artist, theatrical costume and designer, Photographer, Art historian, Art Critic, Teacher, Film and television producer.
