Textiles is suited to students with a genuine interest in working with textiles and the textiles industry. It is recommended that students selecting this course have some prior knowledge and skill development in textiles. The course provides pathways into further education and training or employment in textile related fields. The stage 6 course is a progression of the below subjects- students do not however have to complete these subjects in stage 4 and 5 to select stage 6 Textiles and Design

Course Description:
Studying Textiles and Design allows students to develop knowledge and skills in understanding the functional and aesthetic aspects of a design. They will investigate a wide variety of practical skills that will be used to develop the student’s creative ability to respond to a design brief. Methods to improve an items aesthetic appearance will be explored through dyeing, printing, stencilling, free motion embroidery, machine skills, hand skills, and creating own fabrics through felting and digital printing. One of the Year 11 projects will involve drafting and editing a commercial pattern to create personalised apparel items. Students will also look at the properties and performance of fibres, yarns and fabrics and experiment with a range of fabrics to ensure selection is appropriate to the product’s end use.
In the Year 12 component of the course students will study the historical development of swimwear from past to modern day and they will also investigate the impact culture has had on design. They will explore the impact of contemporary designers and draw from these areas to create major project of their own choice. Finally students will look at the Australian Textile industry and look at the impact it
has having in the 21st century and beyond
Particular Course Requirements:
Access to equipment used in the construction of Textiles – pins, thread, material scissors, needles, embellishment equipment. Students will need a basic sewing kit. Some of the dyes and speciality items will be supplied by the school, and other students will need to supply themselves.
External Assessment:
HSC written Examination– 1 ½ hours – multiple choice, short answers and extended response
