Course Description:
Studying Food Technology encourages students to develop an understanding about food systems and how they play a role in the health and wellbeing of an individual. Practical skills are enhanced through weekly cooking lessons and students will develop an appreciation of the importance of food and overall diet and its impact on the social and economic future of Australia. Students will study factors that influence food choice and how factors such as culture, gender, age, activity level, values, beliefs, attitudes, habits, lifestyle, geographical location, education, household structure and peer group play a role in food choices.
In the Year 12 component of the course students will study the Australian Food Industry – focusing on its produce, its operational structure and its impact on the economy. In food manufacture students will look at the ‘paddock to plate’ approach to food, and how preservatives assist in food quality. In food product development students investigate the reasons for and types of new food products, and apply this process to designing and developing their own food item. Finally in nutrition students will look at the relationship between food – its production, its consumption and health and rising popularity of
speciality foods.
