Course Description:
There are three prescribed themes involving all 4 skill areas:
Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in German.
The personal world:
Aspects of their personal world, personal opinions, values, etc
the German-speaking communities: explores perspectives of groups, communities and encourage reflection of their own and the other culture.
German is one of the most important languages both internationally and within Australia. It has long been recognised as a ‘world’ language of culture, music, theology and philosophy, as well as a key language in the fields of science, medicine, economics and technology. Germany is also a world leader in the development of environmental protection policies.
Knowledge of the German language provides a clearer understanding of the culture, traditions, beliefs, attitudes and values of German speakers. In Europe alone, 100 million people speak German as their first language; a further 40 million in countries throughout the world speak it as a second language, particularly in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Indonesia, Japan and China.
Aims of the Syllabus:
The aim of the syllabus are to develop students’ ability to use German to communicate with others, understand and appreciate the cultural contexts in which German is used, ability to reflect on their own culture through the study of other cultures, understanding of language as a system, ability to make connections between German and English, cognitive, learning and social skills and the potential to apply German to work, further study, training or leisure.
Main Topics Covered:
Family life, home and neighbourhood, People, places and communities, Education and work, Friends, recreation and pastimes, Holidays, travel and tourism. Future plans and aspirations
External Assessment:
Written HSC Examination 80% -2 1/2 hours : Listening and responding, Reading and Responding, Writing
Oral HSC Examination 20%- 3-5minutes: Engage in conversation with the examiner about the students’ personal world.
Employment / University Opportunities:
Many Australian Universities award 5 bonus points for the study of a language for the HSC. Additionally, there is an option to study in Germany on a scholarship, at no expense. Language proficiency tests are a prerequisite. A second language is advantageous in any international career.
