Chapter 6

Area of a Triangle

5th Grade: Chapter 6 Outline

Week 24 - Week 25

Essential Questions:

  • How can two-dimensional objects be represented and compared using geometric attributes?
  • How do you use base and height to find the area of a triangle?

Content:

Students will know and understand:

    • Parts of a triangle: vertex, side, angle
    • Height of a triangle
    • Perpendicular lines
    • Area is the measurement inside an object
    • Lines that meet at a right angle are perpendicular
    • The type of triangle based on angle size (ex. acute, obtuse, and right)

Skills:

Students Will:

    • Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by counting square units, and by using a formula.
    • Identify the base given the height of a triangle.
    • Identify the height given the base of a triangle.
    • Find the area of a triangle given its base and height.

Assessment

Chapter 6 Assessment: Area of a Triangle

Formative Test: Common

Upon completion of Unit 6:

  • 5.NF.B.4b. Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.
  • 5.G.B.3. Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
  • 5.G.B.4. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
