Chapter 18

Two-Dimensional Shapes

3rd Grade: Chapter 18 Outline

Week 26 - Week 27

Essential Questions:

  • How can I analyze and prove polygons and quadrilaterals?
  • How can I analyze the relationships between congruent figures?
  • How can I decide whether or not an object/shape has a line of symmetry?

Content:

Students will know and understand:

    • What a polygon is.
    • What a quadrilateral is.
    • How to rotate shapes.
    • How to identify congruent figures.
    • How to identify the line of symmetry.

Skills:

Students Will:

    • Identify open and closed figures, special polygons, and quadrilaterals.
    • Classify polygons by the number of sides, vertices, and angles.
    • Classify quadrilaterals by parallel sides, length of sides, and angles.
    • Combine and separate polygons to make other polygons.
    • Identify slide, flip, and turn.
    • Identify congruent figures.
    • Identify symmetric figures.
    • Find the line of symmetry.

Assessment

Chapter 18 Assessment: Two-Dimensional Shapes

Formative Test: Common

Upon completion of Unit 18:

  • 3.G.A.1. Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
  • MP.1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • MP.2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  • MP.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  • MP.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • MP.6. Attend to precision.
