Debate Format

The debate will take the form of timed individual and/or group presentations and responses separated by timed group work periods.  When questions arise, the judgment of the instructor will provide the definitive ruling.

Team members may speak either from their desks or from the podium, as they desire.  Audiovisuals may be used at any time, including, but not limited to, handouts, flipcharts, slides, audio and videos, etc.  

While a team is not required to use all of the time allocated to each debate component, speakers must stop immediately when the allocated time runs out.  

Position Statement

• Each team will have 6 minutes to state their position regarding the topic.

• This involves the Opening Statement Presenter and the Topic Presenter

• The Pro Position goes first.

Preparation for Rebuttal

• Both teams will have a 5 minute work period to prepare to rebut their opponent's positions.

Rebuttal

• Each team will have a 4 minute Rebuttal period

• This involves the Rebuttal Presenter

• The Pro Position goes first.

Preparation for Response to Rebuttal

• Both teams will have a 3 minute work period to prepare a response to their opponent's rebuttal.

Response to Rebuttal

• Each team will have a 2 minute Response period

• This involves the Rebuttal Presenter

• The Pro Position goes first.

Summary

• Each team will have 2 minutes to summarize their positions.

• This involves the Captain

• Either team may go first - subject to a coin flip, etc.

Judging

• Judges will have 5 minutes to tally points and declare the winner.
