Kahoot meets Minecraft
Gimkit has just leveled up. If you're not familiar with the tool, it is a gamified quiz platform in the same category as Kahoot and Quizizz. What made it stand out from its competitors was its wide variety of video game options through which teachers could funnel important quiz questions. Students might practice answering the questions in the form of a high-octane game of tag, a more relaxed fishing game, or even an Among Us replica. Gimkit regularly churned out new game modes to keep things interesting. However, with their latest offering, they are releasing creative control to teachers and students.
Gimkit Creative is an end user-friendly version of the same tools they use to create their games! Now teachers and students can create custom game modes complete with any list of quiz questions. This is huge because it puts students in the driver's seat and calls on higher order thinking skills. It creates opportunities for teachers to challenge students to think deeply about content in order to create a game map that connects to it in some fundamental way.
Gimkit Creative also taps into a computational thinker's mindeset. It requires no coding knowledge to put together your very own game, but it does rely on the same principles as coding, offering a scaffolding experience to get students thinking like a coder. Those concepts can then be transferred to more direct coding platforms like Scratch or Minecraft.
Gimkit Creative might be the perfect class project, or one of several options students can always choose from to demonstrate what they've learned. It's a great option to challenge students who finish early and provides an authentic end product that can be turned around and plugged right back into meaningful class instruction.
