Google Vids is a new video recording and editing tool made available to all Google Education users. It is a simple, easy-to-use tool that fits nicely in the Google ecosystem. This change came late this summer, and is a nice addition to our other video recording and editing tools, Clipchamp and Canva. Google Vids is the simplest of the three options, having fewer features but a streamlined platform. Scroll down to see step-by-step instruction screenshots.
Start by going to your Google Drive and click the "new" button just like you would to start a new Doc or Slides document.
Find "Google Vids" in the dropdown menu.
The first thing you will see is a shortcut pop-up. You could click one of these options to save a few clicks or you can just choose "blank vid" or x out of this pop-up.
Now you will have a blank video project open. It looks similar to a Google Slides document, but instead of seeing your slides on the left-hand side, you see your timeline on the bottom of the project.
The menu on the right side of the project shows all your options for adding stuff to your project, whether that be a recording you make yourself, some kind of media that you upload from your computer, or stock content that comes right from Google.
If you want to record yourself, you have several options. You can just record yourself using the camera, or combine that with a screen recording, just record your screen while you talk, or just record your own audio.
If you want to use pre-existing content, you can explore Google's stock menu of content, including video clips, images, music, sound effects and more.
Once you start adding pieces to your video project, you'll see them collect in your timeline. You can always preview your video here or edit your "scenes" by splitting them or adding transitions.
When you've finished your video project, you have several options to share your work. You can copy a link to your video, which for the viewer, will give them a Google link that opens a full-screen version of your video. You can export your video to Drive, so that you have a video file in your Google Drive, ready to share or embed. You can also download your video as an MP4 file on your computer if you want to upload it somewhere else, like Edpuzzle or Youtube.
