Open SketchUp for Schools
Also called SketchUp for Web
Log into your Google account Open Google Drive
Click Blue New Button Select More
Click SketchUp for Schools
Open Template
Click on Simple Template Feet and Inches
Draw Base 1
Select the Line Tool
Picture
Click on Origin
Drag on green access but do not click
Look at the Dimensions at the bottom right corner of the screen
Type 4 Press enter this will make the line 4" long
Use zoom tool to zoom closer
Draw Base 2
Select the Line Tool
Drag right until line turns red but do not click
Look at the Dimensions at the bottom right corner of the screen
Type 8 Press enter this will make the line 8" long
Draw Base 3
Select the Line Tool
Drag down until line turns green so it is parallel to the green axis
Type 4 Press enter this will make the line 4" long
Draw Base 4
Select the Line Tool
Click on origin again to complete the base
If your base is correct it will be filled grey this means no gaps are
in your lines
Base Height
Select Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on the top surface to pull it up 1/2"
If you have a hard time getting the correct dimension
Type .5 press enter this will pull it 1/2"
Change View
Click on Views
Select Top View
Use Zoom Tool to zoom in on the rectangle
Boiler Base
Select the Rectangle Tool
Click and hold to draw a rectangle about 3/4 of the size of the first
Make it a bit narrower than the base
Change View Back to 3D Perspective
Click on Views
Select 3D View
Boiler Base Height
Use Orbit Tool
Orbit to the front of the train
Select Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on the Boiler surface to pull it up 3/8"
Boiler
Use Circle Tool
Start on the midpoint of the Boiler Base rectangle
draw circle to the edge of the Boiler Base
Erase unwanted Geometry
Use Eraser Tool
Erase extra parts of boiler you only need the top half circle
Expand Boiler
Use Orbit Tool
Orbit to the side of the train
Select Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on the Boiler surface to pull same length of Boiler Base
Layout Lines
Use Tape Measure Tool
Start on base edge move to Boiler edge Click
These will create a layout line
Layout Lines for Cab
Use Tape Measure Tool
Start on Left base edge move about half the distance between
Boiler Base and Base Click I made mine 1/8"
Do the same on the right side and the bottom
Draw Cab
Select the Line Tool
Draw lines on top of the layout lines to make the cab wall
Draw Cab Inner wall
Select the Line Tool
Draw lines parallel to the cab wall
Erase Layout Lines
Use Eraser Tool
Erase layout lines
Push/Pull Cab
Select Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on cab walls pull up a bit higher than boiler
Add Front Wall to Cab
Use Orbit Tool
Orbit to see inside Cab
Use the Line Tool
Draw line parallel to the front of cab 1/8"
or whatever width you made your other walls
Pull Up front Wall
Select Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on the front cab wall make it even with other walls
Erase Unwanted Geometry
Use Eraser Tool
Erase extra lines on top and front of cab walls
Check out Cab
Use Orbit Tool
Orbit to front of Cab
If it is too short push pull it up more
Cab Front Window
To center the window we will add Layout Lines to center it
Use Tape Measure Tool
Start on Left Cab edge move a little in Click
Remember the distance and add another layout line on the left edge
I used 3/8"
Draw Cab Window
Use Rectangle Tool
Start on left layout line draw to right layout line
Remove Window
Use Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on Window Drag back to remove it
Use Orbit Tool
Make sure you removed the window
Use Eraser Tool
Erase Layout Lines
Side Windows
Use the Line Tool
Draw line from mid point of side of cab down 7/8"
Repeat for the other side of cab
Side Windows
Use Circle Tool
Start on the midpoint of the Boiler Base rectangle
draw circle to the edge of the Boiler Base
Use Eraser Tool
Erase unwanted Geometry Lines
Remove Window
Use Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on Window Drag back to remove it
Use Orbit Tool
Make sure you removed the window
Repeat 28 and 29 for other side window
Cab Roof
Use the Line Tool
Draw line from back corner of cab up 3/8"
Repeat for the back corner of cab
Connect the top of each 3/8" line
Roof front Back Overhang
Use Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on roof face Drag back to create overhang
Use Orbit Tool
Use Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on roof face Drag forward to create overhang
Roof Side Overhang
Use Push Pull Tool
Click and Hold on side roof face Drag 1/4" out
Use Orbit Tool
Use Push Pull Tool
This time double click on face SketchUp remembers you last push pull
and will pull out 1/4" again
Erase Unwanted Geometry
Use Eraser Tool
Erase unwanted Geometry Lines
Add Layout Lines
Use Orbit Tool
move to back of cab roof
Use Tape Measure Tool
Start on top roof edge move down 1/8"
Start on left edge move in 5/8"
Start on right edge move in 5/8"
These layout lines will be used to make roof sloped
Sloped Roof
Use the Line Tool
Draw line connecting the layout lines to form slope
Sloped Roof 2
Use Orbit Tool
orbit to side view
Use Push Pull Tool
Pull the slope to front of roof so that it removes the sloped section
Orbit to other side
Use Push Pull Tool
Double click on other slope to remove it
Use Eraser Tool
Erase unwanted Geometry Lines
Create Mid Point Line
Use the Line Tool
Find the mid point of the cab roof draw out toward front of train
parallel with ground
Smoke Stack
Click on Views
Select Top View
Use Circle Tool Start outside the boiler
draw circle to about 1/2" diameter
Make Sure Circle turns blue which means it is parallel to blue axis
Move Smoke Stack over Boiler
Use Eraser Tool
Erase unwanted Geometry Lines inside the circle
Use Selection Tool
Double Click on the circle to select the face and the edge
Use Move Tool
Move mouse to edge of circle but don't click
then move to center of circle click and drag on layout line to place circle near the front of boiler
Use Eraser Tool
Erase the rest of layout Lines
Create Smoke Stack
Click on Views
Select Front Left Iso View
Use Push Pull Tool
Pull the Circle down into the boiler
Flare Smoke Stack
Use Selection Tool
Click on the circle
Use Scale Tool
Hold down Ctrl while dragging out to scale uniformly from the center
Flare Smoke Stack 2
Use Push Pull Tool
Pull top of Smoke Stack up a little so it is higher than the cab
Use Selection Tool
Click on the circle
Use Scale Tool
Hold down Ctrl while dragging in to scale uniformly from the center
Wheel Layout Lines
Use Orbit Tool
orbit to underneath base
Use Tape Measure Tool
Start on back edge of base move in to point where you want wheels
Do the same for front wheel axle point
If you want you can add a third wheel
Wheels
Use Circle Tool
Start at intersection of layout line
draw circle to about 1" diameter
Repeat for other side
Wheel Depth
Use Push Pull Tool
Pull the wheel out 1/2"
Double click on each other face to pull out the wheels the same quickly
Erase Unwanted Lines
Use Eraser Tool
Erase the rest of layout Lines
While erasing the wheel lines hold down Ctrl if it erases the face

You can Add more and more detail to your train

Coupling Rods
Pistons
Cowcatcher
Water Tank
Firebox
Spokes on Wheels
Name Plate
Rivits and Bands
etc
Find a picture of a train for ideas
Color Train
Use Selection Tool
Click on Head
Use Paint Tool
Click Browse from Materials pop out
Select the Material and color you want
Click in side the selection
