The Pompallier Shield Competition is an annual event that brings together Catholic secondary schools across Auckland, giving host to a spectacular display of God-given talent.
This year, the prestigious competition was held at Sacred Heart College on the 1st of May
Students from Year 9-13 competed in the following categories: Junior Scripture reading (Te reo Māori or English), Senior Scripture reading (Te reo Māori or English), Junior prepared speeches, Senior oratory, and Waiata singing. Both Carmel and Rosmini College proudly took part.
It was a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves and connect through faith and culture. An energetic buzz hung over the people gathered that day, but beyond the competitive atmosphere, it was also a celebration of the shared values between Catholic schools.
Whether you were listening to a heartfelt proclamation of sacred scripture or sitting for beautiful performances of Waitas, you could feel a strong sense of community and passion at the event.
As the day drew to a close and a dinner of nachos was provided, students started to really enjoy themselves. We were making new friends, joking around, cheering loudly, and even breaking into renditions of Mo Maria and music from Moana while waiting for the results. This year, it was St Mary’s College that took home the crown.
A special thanks to all the teachers involved - and if you’re someone from a Catholic secondary school, be sure to join!
