Big Sing Auckland Regional Choral Competition 2024
From Tuesday 18th June to Thursday 20th June, the annual Big Sing Auckland Regional Choral Competition was held. The competition was hosted by the New Zealand Choral Federation and took place at the Auckland Town Hall.
The Big Sing competition is the largest choral event in New Zealand with over 200 competing choirs annually. Each day, the Auckland regional competition saw a variety of different schools with the choirs performing an assortment of different music genres from classical to jazz.
In the Tuesday morning session, the ‘Carmelites’ represented Carmel College, performing a total of 3 songs. These songs—Balada Amarilla, Oh Love, and All That Jazz—showcased the choir’s technical ability through a range of genres.
The ‘Carmini’ choir, a combined choir of students from both Rosmini College and Carmel College also performed 3 songs. These songs—May God Bless You, I’m Gonna Sing, and You Do Not Walk Alone—reflect the values of integrity, charity and justice held by both schools.
In the afternoon session of Tuesday, the ‘Rosmini Chamber Choir’ represented Rosmini College, performing 3 songs. These songs—Great Is Thy Faithfulness, The Wellerman, and Men In Tights—showcased not only the choir’s technical ability but also their ability to captivate the audience’s attention.
This competition is not only a way for the choirs to showcase their ability and to experience the performance of other choirs but is also an excellent way for students to interact with students from other schools who also share the same passion of singing.
Each day of the competition ended with a gala concert for the choirs to showcase their best song to the general public.
