The Brain Bee Competition is held annually for year 11 students across schools from both New Zealand and Australia.
This year's Carmel Brain Bee team consisted of five members, Madeline Susanto, Polly Walker, Alisha Gonsalves, Yu Na Lim and Rhianna Banglit.
Learning all the necessary content and skills via Education Perfect (EP). The team went to Grafton in the Auckland University and placed 4th out of 22 different teams in the group division.
Polly Walker said, “I enjoyed looking around the university laboratories and looking into detailed forensics reports. This experience made me want to study medicine even more.”
For the individual division, student Yu Na Lim advanced to Round 2. Round 1 is graded from 1 to 10 and students who receive a 4 or higher move on to the next round. Yu Na was selected out of 175 people (6%). After continuing to receive good results, she went to the finals where she and one other student remained. From here, several tiebreakers were held to announce the final winner. Despite losing by one point in the end, Yu Na stated that it was a, “...really valuable experience for me. I learned a lot of interesting facts and developed useful skills during the preparation process for the competition.”
Congratulations to the entire team for their amazing results, especially to Yu Na who received an internship at the University of Auckland!
