Our experience in the Readers Cup competition was exhilarating. Eight people came to the tryouts for the Readers Cup, and we were asked to do a comprehension quiz on a random story to see how much we remembered about it.
Shortly after, we found out that five of us had made the team! We each read all of the six assigned books, and then we also chose either one or two to specialize in. In order to make sure we knew the books we were specialising in from front to back, we took pages of notes to remember details and events. We got together in the library once a week to see how we were all progressing and we quizzed each other on the books. We were also lucky enough to have the help and advice of some girls from last year’s team who helped us a ton with what to expect and how we should prepare!
On the day of the competition, we went to Te Manawa Library and had heaps of fun answering the questions. The questions asked mainly consisted of details about the book that most people would overlook which is why note taking was especially helpful. We were all able to participate in answering the questions in at least four out of the six rounds (due to substitution) and we couldn’t have been happier with how this whole experience turned out and how proud we were to be able to represent our school for this special event.
Overall, the experience was amazing. Although it certainly did take up some of our own time and we had to put in a decent amount of effort, it was totally worth it!
We would like to give our thanks to Mrs Bailey, our librarian, for making this whole thing happen.
