What are examples of ways that students improvised within your class (with their art, with you, or with each other)?
This summer, students completed portraits in two or three ways. Over four days, they began by choosing an image and then cutting it in half. The purpose was to improvise the second half through fantasy, imagination, and creativity. Some Google image examples were shown to the students, but no three-dimensional examples from the artist were offered. Another purpose was to have students lean into creative decision making without an example in front of them to 'set' an expectation. The projects spanned from the 1/2 Portrait Project, Mask Making, and Self Portraits.
Teachers found that students with ADHD were calm and focused during this process in this small group activity.
