How do you understand the concept of sensemaking in relation to your teachig practice?
understand sensemaking as the process through which students make meaning of their experiences by connecting new learning to their identities, emotions, and relationships. In my teaching practice, especially during the morning arts and crafts program, sensemaking happens when students use creative materials as a way to understand themselves and their place within a community.
What is something that you’ve learned about your students (and their funds of knowledge) that has influenced your class projects or class structures?
One important thing I have learned about my students is that they bring a deep well of cultural knowledge, family stories, music, language, and lived experiences into the classroom, even when they do not always have conventional academic language to express it
How have you investigated your teacher inquiry questions thus far?
So far, I have investigated my teacher inquiry questions by observing and documenting student engagement during our morning arts and crafts program. I have paid close attention to how students draw on their funds of knowledge—including cultural experiences, family traditions, and personal interests.
**IMPORTANT: Make sure to describe all photos in detail-- What are students doing? What are they learning? How are they engaging in sensemaking? How are they exploring their inquiries?**
In this project, students explore the journey of the monarch butterfly as a metaphor for growth, migration, and transformation. Through origami, they create their own butterflies while reflecting on their sense of self, considering where they come from, the experiences that shape them, and their hopes and goals for the future.
Students celebrate Día de los Muertos by creating Model Magic sugar skulls, using this hands-on activity to explore their cultural heritage and artistic expression.
As they design and personalize their model magic acorn fantasy animals students reflect on their own identities, values, and experiences, connecting tradition with self-discovery. This project encourages creativity, reflection, and a deeper understanding of both community and self.
For the holiday season, students created Model Magic snow creatures, choosing their designs and bringing their ideas to life. This activity encouraged creativity, hands-on exploration, and joyful self-expression while celebrating the festive season.
