Students at Telpochcalli School had so much fun during our Animals and Music Summer program. We met Monday through Thursday for four weeks. Each session was 1 hour long. Our sessions consisted of students grade kindergarten through 3rd grade.
Our students concentrated on learning about the history of world music through the study of animals in different parts of the world. We also looked at rhythms used in traditional songs which we learned how to play using our hands and feet, and other instruments such as ukuleles, marimba and even boom whackers. Another aspect we looked at were the verses and the imagery used in the different songs. Students were given an opportunity to change the lyrics to the songs thus creating a sense of ownership to these songs. We delved deeper into the songs by studying the animals mentioned in the songs by reading non-fiction as well as fiction books about the animals through online read-aloud videos using apps such as YouTube, EPIC and RAZ kids. Students learned about myths, legends, fables from around the world. Throughout the program we reviewed the differences between these types of stories and how these have been passed on orally for generations.
OWLS
STUDENTS LEARNED OF THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS MADE BY DIFFERENT OWLS. THEY ALSO LEARNED ABOUT TRADITIONAL SONES ASSOCIATED WITH OWLS BY LISTENING TO TRADITIONAL MUSIC FROM MEXICO AND LEARNING DANCE STEPS AS WELL!
STUDENTS ALSO LEARNED TO ACCOMPANY THE SON PLAYING UKULELE AND THE BASIC DANCE STEP TO THE SON DEL TECOLOTE (THE OWL)
Students made owl puppets made out of construction paper.
Students learned about the iguana's habitat and other fun facts. They learned stories, songs and dances from Veracruz, Mexico centered around this reptile. Students also made iguana puppets and wrote their own stories using their iguanas as the main character.
We also begin the class with animal yoga and meditation. Our students come into class and kick their shoes off and leave them off the rest of the time they are in class. Getting comfy!
Music in the garden
Students wanted to skip learning about insects. What better way to do it than going outside looking for bugs! We blasted through some misconceptions about insects such as praying mantis, spiders, cockroaches and yes even lice. They learned stories, songs and dances from around the world like La Tarantella from Italy and El Piojo y la Pulga from Mexico. Students also learned to play songs that talk about bugs. They even found a cicada!
Social Emotional Learning
Everyday the students participated in different social emotional learning activities which focused on getting the students to understand the importance of acknowledging our own as well as other people's feelings and that it is okay to feel them and to share them with others. Some of these activities also helped the students learn that we are all unique and that it is okay to be different. Here are some illustrations created by the students showing their uniqueness and what brings peace to them.
