Inquiry Question: How does shared revision and feedback improve student story telling?
This class is a student driven collaborative workshop class. We start each class seated in a circle sharing or playing together. Creating community was very important to developing a safe space to learn and create together.
In the beginning of the year we follow up with a new skill or concept for them to explore. We show examples and then the students try it out. We then have the students share and receive feedback from the group and rework their work.
After winter break we begin to transition from smaller workshops to working on a longer project that will be a video to share with others. That work continues to build on trying new skills and workshopping their ideas.
One of the key components of the program was to reflect and redo. When the students would share their work we would reflect and then students would revise, redo or move on to a new project to build on the learning. The videos below are examples. We started the year exploring language and making new words by combining two words. Students made stop motion videos represented the combination and then through presenting and workshopping they revised and added to the videos to represent the ideas and communicate more clearly to an audience.

After some more exploration with different types of stop motion we decided to explore stop motion as a tool for special effects in video.
The first exploration of special effects. Some of the students were still unsure of how to use the technique.
We worked to do some shared experiences to build on the students knowledge.
Students continued to explore the concept on their own.
They then played with taking their exploration and turning it into a story.
Working towards a final product. After winter break the students began to choose and develop the ideas for their bigger video project. Students used the ideas from the first part of the year (and from projects from the previous year) and developed a story and characters. We used the same process to continue to workshop as a group.
After finishing the final projects and seeing them at the 8th grade benefit and at the CAPE exhibit we were ready to wrap up the year... until the students decided they wanted to make PODCASTS. So we looked into the medium and started our own podcasts. Some of them plan to continue the the projects over the summer.
