Big Idea - We all have stories worth tellling
Inquiry Question- How does co-creating of stories help us deal with the challenges in the world?
Tell us the story of your project.-We wanted a space to process, build community, build joy, and learn about ourselves and the world
What was your approach to online teaching?
It was important to start with a relaxed energy. Each class began with doodling to music and sharing. We then worked to build community through shared experiences and co-creation and open- ended questions for students to be owners of the process and the space.
Tell us about how cultural capital played a part in your class. The students shared their own stories, interests and relationships to make the class. They were the biggest resource.
Tell us about how family learning played a part in your class. At times, family pets made appearances, and at times siblings would perform together.
Tell us how you used Academic Standards/SEL Standards.
ISBE SEL- Goal 2 - Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.
Through the online platform we allowed students to work together through different forms of collaboration. The idea of an ensemble and the co-creation of ideas was paired with students ability to work on their own and create their own work. The choice and shared decision making was explicit and allowed for students to have agency and grow in their interpersonal skills.
Every day we started class with a doodling ritual. We would play music, doodle, and then share. It was inspired by Mo Willems, but became our own version. This allowed for community building, interest exploration, artistic practice, and a moment of calm.
Students experimented with creative writing that led to solo and ensemble performance where they would perform themselves or a version of themselves and a character who was 'other' than themselves. and image-making in projects such as those above as well as the artifacts collected on this Google Page. We also invite you to explore our large collection of student Flip Grid Videos for many more examples of student work.

Students used tableau to re-recreate images from the 'Touching Strangers' photography project, where strangers were asked to pose on the street together and be photographed. First students watched the video above, then they analyze still photos from the project, then they recreated the photos with whatever they had around the house. Without knowing anything about the subjects photographed, students were asked to create a series of questions around the images.
